I'm joining @ycombinator as a Visiting Partner, with a focus on crypto. If you're an ambitious founder building in crypto that's interested in applying, ping me (DMs open). Y Combinator has been critical to foundational crypto builders: from @coinbase to @axiomexchange to @opensea (and 70 more). In the next decade, we expect there to be hundreds more companies building on blockchains: defi protocols, social networks, new blockchains, stablecoin-powered financial apps, games, infra, wallets and more. They'll need to navigate security, regulatory, global expansion, token issuances, onramps/offramps, usability, and more. In the past, I've supported founders with everything from brainstorming initial company ideas (@OpenSea) to auditing their smart contracts (@dYdX) to helping lead some of their most innovative bets (@coinbase). On a personal level, YC was transformational for me in 2012, giving me the hard lessons to build ambitious early stage ideas. It served me well when helping nurture products like USDC, @coinbasedev, and x402. Excited to give back to the YC community that has given me so much.

It's the one year anniversary since we decided to support Lightning, and 4.5 months since it went live Time for an update! Lightning is now responsible for 6.8% of all BTC sends on @Coinbase. For reference, Eth L2s took about a year to reach this level (back in 2023). Onward⚡

It was an honor to be featured in @Yueqi_Yang's excellent article in @TheInformation about @Coinbase's strong alumni network. You should read it if you can: theinformation.com/articles/coinb… One common theme I noticed about many of the Coinbase alumni featured in the article that went on to build great startups: most of us started at Coinbase before the 2020 crypto cycle. In the depths of the bear market of 2018-2019, we were coming in to the SF headquarters every day, fired up to build the future of the Internet, while our friends at other bay area tech companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, and Apple relaxed in their leisurely south bay campuses, earning generous salaries and stock packages to do very little actual work. After the ICO boom and bust of 2017, if you brought up crypto at a social event you'd often hear "isn't crypto dead already?" But we knew it wasn't, so we came to Coinbase for the mission: to increase economic freedom in the world. I came to appreciate how strong Coinbase's security culture is. When you're building hard cryptography that's used by millions of people and is constantly being attacked by nation state actors, you have to be really secure, not just pretend to be secure by checking boxes for compliance like many of my prior tech jobs. I spent 3 years at Coinbase as a lead engineer building Staking Rewards for both institutional and retail customers. It was an honor to work alongside some of the best engineering, product, and legal (yes we need a lot of legal expertise in this space) minds in the world. After I launched Ethereum staking, I got the urge to build decentralized protocols, so I made the tough decision to leave Coinbase, as much as I loved it. You know, when lead engineers leave a large tech company to form a startup in the same space, some CEOs and companies can't handle it. They get defensive, and out of fear of competition try to talk them out of it. In a worst case scenario, they might even sue the departing employee to try to prevent them from using proprietary knowledge they learned at the big company in their new startup. I was genuinely surprised at how different @brian_armstrong is in this regard. Rather than try to discourage any of us from leaving, instead he was optimistic, supportive, and genuinely wanted to see us succeed in our new ventures. This says a lot about the integrity of the Coinbase leadership team. Brian and the exec team are playing positive sum games, not zero sum games. They know that when Coinbase alumni move on to launch great startups, it benefits everyone in the broader ecosystem, including Coinbase. Crypto is still a nascent industry, and rather than compete like the large FAANG companies over the same limited group of product and engineering leaders, they choose to play the long game and grow the ecosystem. As they say, a rising tide lifts all boats. Kudos to @HaunVentures and the entire team who also believed in us. Many of them are Coinbase alumni as well, and are now leading a multi-billion $ crypto-focused fund that is a force for good in our industry. I don't know if you've read Katie Haun's backstory, but you should sometime. We are grateful to have people like Katie changing hearts and minds in DC and helping to tell the story about how crypto can improve financial outcomes for everyone in the world. wired.com/story/katie-ha… This has been rather long-winded, but to my fellow Coinbase alumni, I wish you all success in your new adventures!

5 years ago, $10 LN sends were scary to me. Today, @coinbase enables up to $10,000 LN sends, with ease and confidence. Another step towards making #bitcoin and the Lightning Network more useful every day. Impressed and proud of how fast the Coinbase team ships! ⚡
