Spain’s governing Socialist Party suffered its worst defeat ever in the country’s largest region, while the conservative People’s Party also lost support. The People’s Party, or PP, won 53 seats in Andalusia’s 109-member legislature on Sunday, compared with 58 in 2022, with 96% of the votes counted. The Socialists took 28 seats, compared to 30 four years ago. The result means the PP would require support from the right-wing party to form a government. Sunday’s election came four months after more than 40 people died in a train crash in Andalusia, which led to strong criticism of the central government. Sánchez’s government has also suffered from a series of criminal investigations involving two close aides, as well as his wife.
