@HenryHonto Graduation celebration for people that just spent $40k that they didn't have on an education. And this dude comes in pitching his company's services. Not what people came for. It's sleazy.

I’m not sure if I’m gonna be in trouble for that but screw it! Google has a whole department whose only job is to steal startups. I was a principal designer at that startup - what we did is literally copy successful startups and launch them under the Google name. How do we find a successful startup you might ask? All your free apps on your phone collect data legally - VPN, ChatGPT, Notes… you name it. All the cool products you build with AI are gonna be stolen one day. You’re literally paying to build and test stuff that all those huge companies are gonna steal from you. Welcome to the real world fam.

I'm scared to make this video, but I feel like I have to. It's time to talk about Google.

Non technical people won't open terminals. How do you expect them to build infra, compile and test code. Create reliable deployment pipelines. Utilize vcs. There are so many things that are way over their head and it's overwhelming for many of them to even open a terminal. Next think about everything that can go wrong when they start going. No backups. No version control. Agents telling them to run this sql statement in prod real quick without the context it needs.

I’ve started developing a fear because I can’t even remember the last time I wrote a single line of code. Right now, I’m just earning my salary by doing prompting something even a non-tech person could probably do easily. Maybe I should start learning hardware, because I can clearly see how AI is going to impact software roles in a very practical way.

It's just not the right place to come in and market / advertise your services. Insane to socially engineer your way into a CEO position and not understand that using a grad speech this way is going to be hugely gross to the audience.

@_andrewthecoder I'm starting to wonder if putting "senior" in your title and a bunch of AI balogna is what needs to be done.

I got an email from a company earlier today (rejection of course). And just as a joke (cuz I didn't figure anyone would monitor the email), I responded something like, "yeah you don't want an old guy with a quarter century of software engineering experience!" Within like 5 minutes, I got an email back saying that they are not allowed to consider my age, my rejection was because the [system] (they didn't say whether it was ATS or AI) stated that I was basically an intern level candidate. (keep in mind, the last 13 years of my career has been me working for myself and running business)!

@SueTee22 @highkeycassie @AntonDee_ @EvanZhao6 Yeah, lol. she said a a few of them seemed real for quite a bit of the interview. Like, took them way too long to realize. So at some point even asking people for an intro video isnt gonna be enough to sort out bots.

@SueTee22 @highkeycassie @AntonDee_ @EvanZhao6 I mean. I think they'd prefer that too, but are probably getting pretty annoyed when they keep trying to talk to real humans and video bots keep showing up. My sister says it's been a huge time waster for the people hiring at her work place.

@SueTee22 @highkeycassie @AntonDee_ @EvanZhao6 In the tech industry, we've all been subjecting ourselves to getting on video calls or in person and doing live coding problems in front of an audience to get a job for decades. Every other job is asking you to write a cover letter to "show initiative". This isn't that crazy.

hot take: if you are a programmer you should be able to invert a binary tree from memory, AI or not. It's ridiculously easy and if you can't do it, you should not have a computer science degree
Yuchen Jin@Yuchenj_UW

I’m so glad AI killed LeetCode interviews. For 10 years, tech companies made every engineer grind the same puzzles and prove they could invert a binary tree from memory. Today, the dumbest AI model can walk in and one-shot the entire interview. Thank you, AI.

how do teams actually share .env variables securely because the options I see are - Slack DM (terrible) - email (worse) - shared Notion doc (somehow even worse) - 1Password or similar - something I'm missing

pre-Covid Social Distancer 😷
@Shplops @Cheetowunga Actually, yes! It ended up being one of the best jobs I ever had. I was super polite about it all. “Nothing personal, but it cost me a lot to get set up here for this job.” “I’m sure you understand.” Yada yada. 2-3 hours later I got a call saying the problem had been resolved.

@Cheetowunga A company did that to me once. After I politely explained that I fully understood, “things happen”, I promised no hard feelings, but that I WOULD see them in small claims court to recoup my losses, the job magically reappeared. Funny how that works.
