@neoavatara Is there any field of medicine less robust and reliable than nutrition science? Serious question.

@EsotericCD But what was Dick Jones doing openly associating with this notorious cop killer? Biggest plot problem that I never spotted as a kid (the first 20 times I saw this movie).

When I was young I quickly concluded there was no point in being villainous because I'd never be as cool as a villain as Clarence Boddicker.

@mattyglesias Okay but there’s clearly a difference between his work which is mostly apolitical and, say, Avatar, which is shot through with leftist messages (but still awesome!).

@EsotericCD How can you ever top Nordberg cringing away from a wet paint wall, even as he’s been shot 20 times? Or, “We won’t rest until his killers are found. Now Ed, let’s go get a bite to eat”? The answer is, you can’t.

@EsotericCD Hard disagree. Top Secret felt to me like a shaggy, disjointed warm-up for Airplane!, before they figured out how to make these movies. I was astonished when I did the math and realized TS was after A!. One problem with TS is there just aren’t enough gags.

@conor64 @benryanwriter A few reasons: quarantine except for BLM protests; shutting down schools, playgrounds (!), and state parks (!!); and masking kids in school. And plainly false stmts from officials like R Walensky who said masks 80% effective. (Leaving aside support for youth "GAC")

A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by the end of the Covid-19 emergency trust in public health institutions had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.

@LoganDobson Interestingly, the reporter at least includes “though she entered the country illegally.” That’s progress on this front. Also savor the Nancy Tung quote which seems to suggest airports were previously a no-arrests-allowed zone!

So: In addition to hours-long lines at airports around the country, LaGuardia is closed because of a runway collision that led to at least two deaths, and Newark has a ground stop because it smells like smoke in the air-traffic-control tower. So much winning in Trump's America!
ABC News@ABC

DEVELOPING: A ground stop was in place on Monday morning at Newark Liberty International Airport, where an air traffic control tower was evacuated due to reports of smoke, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. abcnews.link/nCzUm76

There will be NO male and female dressing rooms, only mixed sex. See quote from the LA Times article in this: On the ground floor, the building’s open-air male and female changing rooms will merge into one larger indoor gender-neutral area with private changing rooms and toilet stalls, Kingsnorth said. “Every single toilet room and dressing room is an individual room,” Kingsnorth said. Kingsnorth said the gender-neutral dressing room design was not mandated by state or federal restrictions but was a priority for the city’s Recreation and Parks Department. On projects like this, Kingsnorth said, “this is something that’s more common for equity and inclusion.”

@wesyang @dilanesper I can determine your pronouns, what sports team you belong on, etc., without even knowing how you identify. So how are these actions discriminatory?

@wesyang @dilanesper How is declining to call a man “her” prejudice? It’s the opposite of prejudice! It’s the same rule for everyone: sex determines pronouns. (This gets to a core logical problem with so many TRA args: ignoring gender identity isn’t discriminatory.)

If I do a thread about a trans woman and call her "her", and you come in my thread and "correct" me and say "you mean him", I'm probably going to block you. Beyond expressing prejudice, you are being immature and uninteresting. It adds nothing to go into threads and say that.

David Roberts is adamant that the only reason the issue of transgender girls playing in girls’ sports has any salience with the public is because right-wing media manufactured a moral panic about this. In Roberts’ view, no one became concerned about this issue organically.

@randolphkwatson @benryanwriter Yeah, my take is: journos should be paid what the market will bear. Now, I *wish* the market would bear a living wage for good journos. But if not, then that’s that.

@benryanwriter Surprisingly controversial take: the value your work brings is the value the market pays you for it. Limited exceptions for situations where markets are manipulated (cartels, monopolies etc). But very limited. Writing is fun. If you want to get paid, need rare talent + luck.

@asymmetricinfo I’m old enough to remember when (the ‘90s) fairness in sports and Title IX were big public issues for progs. Now, suddenly, if a girl loses out on behalf of a boy progs say “oh boo hoo it’s just a game.”

This is an interesting argument from The Argument that the intensity of travel sports explains a lot of the backlash to trans female participation in women’s sports. Probably it’s a factor but having reported on it I think other factors were much more important.

Trump might have lost in 2024 if the right's media propagandists hadn't convinced themselves that the alternative was "gulags" for Republicans. This is self-induced psychosis. Everything becomes possible by convincing yourselves of cartoonish lies about your opponents.
Cernovich@Cernovich

Zero regrets about voting for Trump. Good grief. People have too short of memories. I have a lot of grievances but real life isn’t measured by utopia, it’s measured by the alternate reality - which was gulags.
