If you siphon a permanent slice of the country’s most productive private capital every year and divert it into politically convenient short‑term welfare promises, you don’t “fix” the state – you lock Britain into dependency and make future growth even harder to fund without ever‑higher raids.

Isn’t this sudden adulation for Manchester the same as their adulation for the EU? Manchester isn’t a success story. Manchester is one of the most deprived regions in the UK. But because it has a few trendy areas where the men dress like Andy Burnham and you can get an oat milk latte, that’s all they choose to focus on. And then they wonder why the rest of the population feels ignored 😞

@afneil I personally believe that a any change of Prime Minister should mandate a General Election. It’s interesting how often I’ve said this previously.

Also Truss and Sunak had fought the general election which got the government elected. Burnham didn’t.

@SladesCross If people think there is a climate crisis that can be solved with more taxation, our problems are much worse than I thought.

But we "can't afford the state pension". The state pension makes up about 10% of UK public spending. That extra payment earmarked for foreign aid is about 1.5% of public spending. Shouldn't we be aiding our own people first? I bet we could find other examples of UK taxpayer money being squandered on non British citizens that could be spent on British people in Britain. Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East? Asylum seeker accommodation? NHS treatment for non citizens? Benefits for non citizens? Efficiency savings in the civil service? An end to final salary linked pensions in the public sector? All of that would comfortably pay for the state pension. It's not that we can't afford the state pension. Politicians have just decided pensioners are not their priority. Foreign aid, foreign wars, fat pensions for public sector workers, benefits for non Brits, are all more important, apparently.

Sadly, I am watching GB News and Portillo. All tax is bad and no expenditure is good unless it is my expenditure. Inequality does not exist in Britain really. Where are these people found!

Opinions on this move generally depend on what decade you were brought up supporting Wolves I think. I was brought up supporting us in the 90s and don't see Villa as a close rival. The younger generation clearly do. Hate WBA, Blues and Stoke more.

People who own their own home sell it to help pay the costs of living in a care home as my parents did.I helped them find a high quality private sector home. I do not see why taxpayers should have to pay when many elderly can afford the care home. The NHS is still free for all.

@johnredwood People don't spend a lifetime working and saving just for themselves, they do it to leave something for their children. Why should one family have to sell the family home to pay for care while another pays nothing? That's socialism not fairness.

@johnredwood So let’s all the hardworking people spend all their savings and leave nothing for their kids on care homes and line their pockets instead. Or sign your house over like my parents did years ago to prevent care homes forcing sales and stealing all your money.

A collectivist utopia is being created here in the degraded British Isles. A socialist Ponzi scheme has been in operation since 1996 under Tony Blair. The railways, the Post Office and British Steel are all nationalised and all heavily loss making. They need large government grants to keep them trading. How much more does Mr Burnham want to tax us for more nationalised loss makers?
