@lyndseyfifield We took a few years from any hikes more than a mile. Now that all the kids are old enough, this trip we did 4 hikes between 2.5-5 mile round trip. It’s so beautiful in New Hampshire! Painted by the hands of God! I hiked to the summit of MT Washington many years ago, Best Ever!!

@Spaulding3030 Now THAT looks like some great hiking - look at those rocks!! The great news is that so many years later our group now has 16 kids (and one on the way!) amongst us so the only group vacations we can reasonably take are camping and hiking trips anyway!

On July 21, 2018, a record-setting storm system and atmospheric river swept across the Mid-Atlantic, unleashing torrential rain that triggered widespread flash flooding and numerous water rescues. Rainfall totals exceeded seven inches across parts of central Maryland. That was also the day @mkhammer @JerriAnnHenry and I decided to hike the entire state of Maryland section of the Appalachian Trail (41 miles called the Maryland Challenge)—by starting with headlamps at 4AM and hiking/climbing up rocks the entire day. The Challenge is usually done over 4 days, but we were well-provisioned, experienced hikers and decided we would complete it in just one. Our high spirits had been briefly dampened when we realized the hippie airbnb for throughhikers we'd stayed in that night had only mason jars full of moldy herbs and nothing resembling coffee - surely the worst thing that would happen to us that day - but we found a gas station and decided everything was going to be fine after we poured ourselves gigantic styrofoam cups and got to the trailhead just before 4. It was a mostly-gorgeous day of hiking, but by the afternoon the rain was falling so hard we couldn't hear each other and it was like we were hiking up an actual creek—but we still had high spirits and insisted we would finish. Some folks we encountered in shelters along the way said they'd make room and insisted we should just stay put and wait for the glorious rain-free day to come, but that seemed silly. At about mile 27, MK tried to motivate us with an insane story about a frontierswoman who overcame a bear attack and gun shot wound and falling off a cliff or something - I can't remember the details because I was more ticked off than I'd ever been in my life. Just when I thought I couldn't go on, I let my anger and the energy gel I found in my jacket pocket propel me forward and told the girls I would run ahead to the next white blaze/marker to stand under a tree and open my pack to get our headlamps out since it was very near dark and I didn't want water pouring into my pack. I wouldn't see them again for 30 terrifying minutes. After I got the headlamps out and closed my pack back up, I realized they should be in sight by now. I started doubling back down the trail to find them and when I reached the point that I had left them at, I tried very hard not to panic but began screaming pointlessly into the woods. Terror set in when I realized absolutely nothing could be heard over the sound of the endlessly pouring rain. I decided to get back to the agreed upon marker and get my phone out of its ziplock in my pack to call them. I tried both their phones and JAH's wife, Dawn (who was waiting for us at Harper's Ferry) but never got through to anyone. The biggest problem was that I was carrying all of our headlamps (I KNOW DAD, I KNOW) and it was about 8PM. I talked to Jesus and assessed the situation: Not great for any of us but at least MK and JAH had each other. We were all in for an uncomfortable night wrapped in mylar blankets soaking wet and eating soggy granola bars til daylight, but nobody was going to die or anything (right, Lord?). We're still not totally sure how we passed each other - there are some back trails and there were double white flags leading to the cliffs that might have confused us but either way, when we found each other we were so overjoyed it would have been the perfect ending to a dramatic film... Except this was real life and we still had to hike DOWN the damn mountain. The good news was that we had just reached the section we had been LONGING for all day: After 28 miles of climbing UP, we finally got to start going DOWN and coasting to Harper's Ferry. As one hiking blogger wrote “One of the best parts about going southbound on this challenge is how easy the last ten or so miles are. You have a pretty steep descent of switchbacks down to the Potomac, but once you reach the river, it’s as flat as a pancake, and you can basically just put your legs in cruise control for the last hour.” It was then I heard the helicopter. “Is that a helicopter?” I actually asked. JAH said “yeah... they told us they were coming to get you.” You see, when hikers get separated near dark alone on a mountain in historic rainfall, you have to tell a ranger what's going on so they can come rescue your stupid friend. So as soon as we found each other (and ugly cry group hugged), MK called to tell the ranger they had found me and that rescue was no longer needed. We would complain for 4 miles, clinging to one another and sloshing down slippery switchbacks in pitch darkness (my headlamp was not waterproof and gave out so my only light was from the others) that we should have just gotten on the damn helicopter, but MK insisted the internet shame would ruin our careers (let's be honest, just hers) and that it was of course morally wrong to waste resources or put rescuers in danger plucking stubborn women off a mountain. JAH's wife had been waiting for us at Harper's Ferry and the poor woman had been going around to shelters trying to find us when we finally got a call to go hrough and asked her to meet us in the parking lot of Gathland State Park instead. We'd been hiking (with breaks) for 18 hours when we reached the parking lot. We made it 31 miles and none of us wanted to quit, but when we took off our packs and crawled into the back seat of that blessed woman's SUV to find a pile of dry towels, sweatshirts, and sweat pants we decided quitting was the only thing to do and consoled ourselves with promises to hike the last 10 miles another day. We pulled up to MK's house some time after midnight and could barely walk up her 3 front steps to crash on her couch. I took an uber home around 6AM and laughed looking out the window at the mellow pink sunrise coming up on a perfectly clear day. My driver was confused that I was not, in fact, a drunk girl walk of shaming back to my apartment but was a totally sober but physically exhausted shell of a human who limped out of his car into my building. And after all of that, this is a screenshot of a text exchange I had with MK at 8AM that morning. How she is still friends with me I could not tell you.

We arrested over 1000 unlicensed and uninsured illegal immigrants. That all changed when Tom Perez and the Obama DOJ came into town. Now East Haven is a sanctuary.
