Over the past 24 hours, thousands of TikToks (at least) have been posted where people share how they just read Bin Laden’s infamous "Letter to America," in which he explained why he attacked the United States. The TikToks are from people of all ages, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Many of them say that reading the letter has opened their eyes, and they’ll never see geopolitical matters the same way again. Many of them — and I have watched a lot — say it has made them reevaluate their perspective on how what is often labeled as terrorism can be a legitimate form of resistance to a hostile power. This is not limited to TikTok; similar videos have been posted on other social media platforms. The Guardian had a copy of “Letter to America” posted, but once these TikToks went viral, the Guardian took it down, which has only led to more interest in the letter and conspiracies from TikTokers who say this is part of the media and the powers that control it trying to silence the truth.

Today, Loom got bought by Atlassian for $975M in CASH, and here’s my little secret:
I passed on investing in their pre-seed round when they were only worth ~$6.5M.
So, my $25k could have turned into a whopping $3M-$4M lmao
Here’s what I learned from watching them grow from an idea on a napkin into a mega business:

This was Shahed, one of the co-founders email asking me to invest...
Ok enough pain... let's get to lessons learned:
1. It’s Okay to Start Small and Imperfect
In fact - it's the only way to start.
Loom first started as OpenTest, not the prettiest name or product, but they focused on what mattered most:
Making a product people wanted
Once they knew they were onto something, that, everything else, including a name change, followed.

2. Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket
This was my response to Shahed when he asked if I wanted to invest.
Brutal for me to re-read this.
Back then, I was all about focusing on my own VC-backed startup so I invested in others seldomly.
VCs told me I have to focus.
"Founders who don't focus don't win."
It was my mistake that I listened to them. Today, I know better.
I run a portfolio of profitable businesses power by community.
My lesson to you is build a portfolio, not a business.
3. Be Community-Obsessed with Making Things Better
When I'd run into Loom's founders, Joe, Vinay, and Shahed, the conversation was never focused around iterating on the product for the community.
They never talked about fundraising
They never talked about optimizing valuation
They never talked about M&A
Product over everything.
They constantly tweaked and adjusted, always with an ear to their community, never just chasing a big payday.
Iteration pays off.
This was in the original fundraising deck... their original alpha.
It's come a long way since 2015!

This is a huge win not just for the Loom team and investors but for community products.
It's a reminder that community-based businesses can be MASSIVE.
