Meet Kaka Ram, who during #KargilWar in 1999, volunteered to join a Ad-hoc porter company raised by the Northern Command of #IndianArmy. A total of six such companies were raised consisting around 3500 volunteers. On 6th June 1999 they were inducted in forward areas. They carried ammunition, food, fuel and other essentials commodities sometimes at altitude exceeding 17000 feet. Accordingly Kaka Ram was attached with the 8th Battalion of the SIKH REGIMENT, which was responsible for securing Tiger Hills. On 6th July 1999, when the fierce fighting was going on the Tiger Hills, Kaka Ram and his team was also actively involved there performing their duties. Suddenly an enemy artillery shell landed near them and exploded injuring few among them including Kaka Ram. All the injured were evacuated except Porter Krishan Lal who was blown into pieces in the blast. Kaka Ram was then treated for couple of months or so at Command Hospital Udhumpur, before being released by the Army. During the war, fifty plus porters were injured and seven porters included Krishan Lal were immortalised while performing their duties. After the war, these porters were promised some type of compensation and jobs. Few of them could manage to get recruited in the recruitment rallies but the large number of them are still fighting for their justice. It’s now 26 years for Kaka Ram and his team writing letters to authorities, seeking meetings and getting assurances. He is let down not just by the politicians and bureaucrats but by also those in uniform. Kaka Ram is married with three children. He works as a daily wager and tilts a small piece of his land.
