I’m furious. We’ve gotten official word that “several” students at my college have had their visas pulled (among the hundreds reported across the country). No reasons given. My school is about as activist as a jar of peanut butter. My other international students are worried. Is there a list? Who’s being pulled. Is any politics bad? Now they’re afraid to express themselves. If you say “good,” you have my utter contempt. My foreign students came to America to learn, both the specifics of their majors, but also the larger lessons America has to teach about freedom and success, about being able to explore ideas and experiment with different versions of themselves. And Trump is taking that away. Be quiet. Keep your head down. Free speech is for others, not you. Just like back home. If you’re thrilled because all those blue-haired woke kids are getting their comeuppance, you should know that during the culture wars, my international students have always been a breath of fresh air, challenging woke shibboleths because they came from worlds where none of that made sense. I’d gladly take 10 kids from China over 10 kids from a progressive Brooklyn private school (sorry Zoe). But I’m sure the Trump administration is carefully vetting their deportation lists, not just doing random searches of social media sites for dangerous words like “trans,” or “Palestine,” or “free speech.” Because we can trust the government.

I need the people talking about “Growing vanilla in America” to understand that there is absolutely no way that happens. The growing requirements for vanilla are so specific that replicating it outside the tropics is nearly impossible, it takes three years of growth 1/?

@meathead @WhereHodler Therein lies the problem, the FDA mission specifically states it only adresses “immediate” trauma. Long term health is ignored

Your health is at risk. My wife is a PhD microbiologist. She retired from the FDA in 2018. She and her team did vital research on food safety. They developed rapid testing methods for detecting pathogens (one of her tests was adopted by McDonalds). She was involved in identifying the pathogens found in BlueBell ice cream and Jack-in-the-Box and many other cases. There were a dozen or so other teams in her lab working to save lives and make food safer. They all got the axe today. And don't give me the BS that the FDA is corrupt. These are scientists not politicians. She couldn't even accept a box of donuts from an equipment salesman and they made me sell my stock in OXO Good Grips because the FDA regulates kitchen tools. They worked long and hard for you. This is sad.

@TheRickWilson Counterpoint, there was a ton of vetting, but it yielded the least qualified and most culture war prone folks. Don't forget that the Project 2025 folks play a big part in all of this.

In case you missed Elon’s 14 flags tweet, here’s what you need to know: He is involved in a system of communication with white supremacists and he’s not even giving dog-whistles anymore. The 14 word slogan posted at 11:14pm among white supremacists: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." When fascism comes to America it’ll be wrapped in a flag. Most sane people will argue it’s already here…

President Trump just fired: • 90 physicians • 350 nurses • at least 25 nurse practitioners • nearly 20 dentists • 85+ pharmacists • 45 lab techs All employed by the Indian Health Service to provide health care. This is going to have dangerous consequences for our Indigenous brothers and sisters. ictnews.org/news/abrupt-fe…

🚨 BREAKING: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital denies VP J.D. Vance’s 12-year-old relative a heart transplant because she isn’t vaccinated against COVID-19, per NYP. So let’s get this straight—Vance spent years screaming about vaccine mandates, but now his own family is facing the very real consequences of ignoring medical guidelines? Turns out, anti-science rhetoric doesn’t hold up when it’s your loved one on the operating table.

@jiredia @dianarachel__ @SSN674Trepang @allenanalysis We literally do. Anyone who was immunocompromised was highly recommended to get the Covid vaccine. It significantly increased their chances of not being hospitalized with serious disease. A transplant donee automatically become immune compromised when they receive a transplant

@dianarachel__ @SSN674Trepang @allenanalysis You can throw the word science around. It doesn't mean that you're saying anything scientific. You have NO PROOF that people who have not been covid vaxxed getting a transplant are at any more risk than those who have gotten the covid shot.

@RamonaRichey @allenanalysis Do you know what an organ transplant is like? And organ donee automatically becomes immunocompromised for a significant period of time. If you're not vaccinated against a variety of diseases then you're at a much higher chance of dying or experiencing transplant rejection.

Which of course means you're fine with the Pentagon budget being slashed by 30% right? Doge could immediately find the 2 Billion in savings that way. After all, the DoD hasn't passed an audit in a few years now... Clearly there is mis-spending there.
@jason@Jason

Until we balance the budget, I’m literally for randomly cutting everything by 10-35% and seeing what happens At least on this scenario we live to fight another day BTW: this is what happens to individuals who go broke: credit cards turn off & Netflix gets paused! 😂

People in Denmark now see the United States as a bigger threat than North Korea and Iran. Denmark has until now been one of the most pro-American countries in the world and one the longest standing allies of the United States. But it looks like the world's most poorly justifiied ("we need it") illegal land claim has hurt relations enormously. Who could have guessed. theguardian.com/world/2025/jan…

@DreAllDay @esjesjesj But that's not what I'm saying. The OP asks a question of why this EO is good. Your response is "because people voted for him and he won, thus his action is the will of the people" My response is to ask, so if he does anything at all, it's good cause it's the will of the people?

@SuchiththaW @esjesjesj This overlooks the system of checks and balances that our govt is based on. POTUS does not have absolute power. People only talk as if he does — and offer these fear mongering hypotheticals – when it’s Trump.

People really just make up a reason why something must be wrong and then assert their confidence in the thing they just made up /out loud, where everyone can hear them./ Then i guess they move on with their day having given up any allegiance to accuracy or curiosity. Wild.
white guy@LovePhoenix69

@hankgreen how much of this is just because of increased surveillance, a lot of which is unnecessary, leading to more diagnoses of typically nonlethal cancers? i wager a lot

@DJcalligraphy @DreAllDay @esjesjesj That is how elections work. I know that. I'm saying that you can't handwave the decisions that the leader makes using that. Democracy isn't just checking in every 4 years. Every major decision being made needs to be scrutinised especially if it might cause major harm.

@DreAllDay @esjesjesj This is an incredibly reductive answer. So anything he chooses to do is an extension of the will of the people? What if he invades Canada? Or Nukes Mexico? Or starts WW3? You can't just handwave everything he chooses to do as "the will of those who voted for him".

While I do not deem myself a “Trump supporter,” I do understand logic, so I will help here. 1. Since half the people on this app absolutely hate Trump, they often pull things about him out of context, and frame them in the most negative right. What you have shared here is one example. If you already hate Trump, context is unnecessary – this is enough for you to go off of, as it confirms what you already believe — Trump is terrible. 2. Even if this was in 100% full context, Trump was chosen by the American people via a Democratic, free and fair election. So, the decisions that he makes are by extension, the decision that we as citizens, made.
