There is no point in imposing costs that will ultimately be paid by the Government to the Court, only to return to the Government. It is merely an internal accounting exercise. Instead, the costs should be imposed directly on the concerned Law Officers i.e., the Government counsels who gave the opinion, prepared, and filed the SLP/Appeal, and recovered from their personal pockets. This alone will act as a deterrent.

Supreme Court hears case of a man removed from CISF service because of unauthorised absence: ASG SD Sanjay: absence is of 11 days. Justice BV Nagarathna: this is a case for imposing cost with dismissal. We have been shouting. Pendency, pendency. Who is the biggest litigant? His dismissal is disproportionate. High court granted him relief. Instead of giving opinion that you will not go to Supreme Court, you still proceed against him. What had we said in the SCBA function? (referring to SCBA’s national conference where Justice Nagarathna recently spoke extensively about government being responsible for case backlog). We will impose cost in this case. We do not find any reason whatsoever to interfere with the impugned order. We fail to understand as to why the Union of India and others have approached this court. We dismiss this SLP with cost of Rs. 25000. Justice Nagarathna: we have taken the SCBA conference very seriously. It was not just to go to some resort and come back. We made preparations, we did homework. We spoke. Not to forget.

ये @RubikaLiyaquat आपको ये नहीं बताएगी की इसी भाजपा को कोर्ट ने FCRA Bill के तहत दोषी पाया था। विदेशी फंडिंग लेने के मामले में दोषी पाया था और सज़ा भी हुई थी। तब इसी भाजपा ने संसद में FCRA Amendment Bill Retrospective date से पास करके खुद को कोर्ट की सज़ा से बचाया था।

FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 विदेशी फंडिंग, NGOs और कंट्रोल… मुद्दा बड़ा है, असर उससे भी बड़ा। सरकार कहती है - ये बिल “misuse” रोकने के लिए है। ₹22,000 करोड़ की विदेशी फंडिंग… 16,000 NGOs… जवाबदेही तो बनती है। सरकार का तर्क साफ है: • पारदर्शिता बढ़ानी है • नेशनल सिक्योरिटी से No समझौता • अगर FCRA लाइसेंस रद्द होता है, तो संपत्ति पर भी नज़र रखना ज़रूरी यानी सिर्फ पैसे पर नहीं… पूरे सिस्टम पर निगरानी। कांग्रेस और लेफ्ट कह रहे हैं: • ये “कंट्रोल बिल” है, सुधार नहीं • सिविल सोसायटी को दबाने की कोशिश • NGOs और अल्पसंख्यक संस्थाओं को निशाना बनाया जा सकता है… वक़्त-वक़्त पर दिखा है कि विदेशी फंडिंग सिर्फ पैसा नहीं होता ये पावर, नैरेटिव और इन्फ्लुएंस का गेम है। भारत को फूँक-फूँक कर क़दम रखना ही चाहिए…

The government intends to not just target but kill NGOs and institutions by what can be described only as hostile takeovers by government appointed authorities. The Congress strongly opposes this dictatorial bill. This is the 4th amendment to the FCRA by the BJP government since 2014, showing its utter disregard for organisations working selflessly for the larger good.

Govt wants #Parliament to be on a 'bill making spree' as only last 2 days of #BudgetSession are left! Already 2 Bills were listed in #LokSabha today - Jan Vishwas and #FCRA amendment and now through a supplementary list, Govt has also listed for introduction AND passing Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill. Why did the Govt wait till the second last day of the Budget Session to bring this Bill, when the session started on 28th January? Suddenly bringing Bills as a surprise, not sending Bills to Committee and rushing through with Bills in a short period of time all indicate very clearly that Govt considers Parliament merely as a rubberstamp.

The Modi Govt is proposing to bulldoze a Bill to increase the size of the Lok Sabha by 50%. The number of seats allocated to each state is also proposed to be increased by 50%. The argument that a 50% increase in seats across-the-board is equitable is deceptive. Proportions may not change for the present but there are deeper implications that cannot be wished away. Any increase in the gap in the existing strengths of different states in the Lok Sabha will place South Indian states at a disadvantage. For instance, currently Uttar Pradesh has 80 seats and Tamil Nadu has 39. With the proposed Bill, UP’s strength will zoom to 120 while Tamil Nadu will crawl up to at best 59. Similarly, Kerala will increase from 20 Lok Sabha seats to 30 seats, while Bihar will move from 40 to 60 seats. Overall, the southern states will gain 66 seats while the northern states will gain 200 seats. Mr. Modi is unilaterally preparing a law which will disadvantage smaller states in the South, Northeast, and West. The Chief Minister of Telangana has already raised an alarm. Others may very well follow as this proposal becomes officially public.
