Privacy regulations require consent to use tracking “cookies." This MSI working paper uses an online field experiment to determine how consumers respond to different cookie consent banner designs. Which design would work best for you?: ow.ly/qVZB50YfgzF #Tracking #Privacy

🍪🤖🧠⚖️⏳ Are you an acceptor, discerner, or rejector? by Chiara Farronato, @AndreyFradkin and @TesaryLin 📌The purpose of the study is to measure how different #cookie-consent designs affect user welfare and identify which consent model saves consumers the most time and money. * Acceptor (45%) — People who click “Accept all” everywhere. They like convenience and don’t mind sharing data. * Discerner (37%) — They decide case by case, choosing differently depending on the website. * Rejector (18%) — They almost always choose “Reject all” and dislike #data sharing. 📌Hidden buttons matter: When “Reject all” is buried under “Settings,” users are heavily nudged toward accepting. 📌Best policy for consumers: Browser-level privacy control saves the most time and money — far better than any banner redesign. In our new working paper, we study how to design consent mechanisms for data collection. TLDR; instead of focusing on the specific consent interface, we should focus on the frequency of consent decisions and default sharing rules.

🚨Working paper update!🚨 What is the impact of strict #privacy regulation on content supply and demand? In Sept 2019, YouTube paid a record $170M to settle charges it violated children’s privacy law (#COPPA). We use this to study the "privacy-for-content" tradeoff. 1/11
