I mean, his criticism was a bit sloppy, but they didn't provide a token spend for their results, only a vague test-time compute vs pass-rate plot, so he was half right. Everyone should feel some natural existential dread from the pace of AI's advancements. That's like half the discussion from the internet math nerds about this result.

If he's a great guy why are you being so disrespectful. You came in reflexively dismissing an achievement he's tying his name to and your questions are explicitly answered by the documents released by openai. You say we don't know the level of human intervention but we do know this. The primary result was completely autonomous. They even released a 125 page thinking trace of the model autonomously reasoning its way to the result. So one of two things has to be true here; Either you are accusing Gowers of collaborating with openai to perpetuate massive fraud. OR You respect Gowers so little that you didn't even bother to do a cursory reading of the release before QTing him with your criticism Which one is it?

@academic_la Israel Katz's appointment as the defense minister has been one of the most egregious instances of Israel being a murderous parody of itself. Netanyahu really put a nigga named Israel, who loves openly genocidal rhetoric, in charge of the fucking IDF.

We now know a lot more about how the case against the rapists in Sde Teiman was dismissed. It was not the legal system that did it, bit rather the Defense Minister Yisrael Katz and Netanyahu: 1) Katz publicly attacked Military Advocate General (MAG) Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, framing the investigation as a "blood libel" against the IDF. 2) Following the leak of CCTV footage of the abuse, Katz leveraged political pressure to force Tomer-Yerushalmi out of her position. 3) This pressure signaled to the military legal apparatus that prosecuting soldiers, even with video evidence, would be treated as an act of treason. 4) Once a new Chief Military Advocate was appointed, all charges against the five reservists were dropped. The prosecution claimed a fair trial was no longer possible. 5) Katz met with the accused soldiers, apologized for the "wrong" done to them by the system, and ordered their immediate return to active service. 6) By rehabilitating the accused, the Defense Ministry effectively signaled to the ranks that such actions would be politically protected, impacting future IDF discipline. 7) The decision was praised by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This shows that support for the torture and rape of inmates goes all the way to the top. There is no other way to understand this. The rapes that have occurred in Sde Teiman and elsewhere, the torture and the abuse are being protected by Katz and Netanyahu. The State of Israel at the highest level has its fingerprints all over this.

BIG SCOOP: US-Israel goal was to install former President Ahmadinejad as Iran's leader (aka Delcy) An Israeli strike designed to free him from house arrest was part of an effort to bring about regime change and put him in power. w/ @MarkMazzettiNYT @julianbarnes @ronenbergman nytimes.com/2026/05/19/us/…

Every day I push back on the lie that Israelis are cruel. That we have no decent people. That we’re the villains the anti-Israel crowd says we are. Then you open your mouth, Ben Gvir, and prove them right. The flotilla are useful idiots. You’re the gift they prayed for. You don’t deserve to be in this government or any government. Actually, I wouldn’t trust you to wash my car.

It’s hard to overstate how implausible this plan was. The idea that an air campaign could somehow pave the way for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a figure deeply despised by Khamenei and long marginalized by the regime, to return to power in Iran was detached from political reality from the start. Ahmadinejad never had meaningful backing from the Revolutionary Guards, and there was never a credible path for him to seize control of the state. As more details emerge about the Iran campaign, the clearer it becomes how recklessly underprepared it was and how profoundly its architects misunderstood Iran’s political and military system. This was not merely a failed operation; it was a fiasco rooted in a strategy that bore little resemblance to the realities on the ground. The Ahmadinejad episode is simply another nail in the coffin of the fantasy that outside military pressure could engineer regime change in Iran. I don’t know what other details about these plans are still waiting to emerge, but the pattern is already unmistakable: the Kurds, Ahmadinejad, faith in air power, fantasies of eliminating Ali Khamenei — every element pointed toward the same inevitable conclusion. The failure was visible from the start. The people who designed this operation may have had power, resources, and confidence, but they lacked the one thing that mattered most: any real understanding of Iran. The Iran War "strategy" looks even crazier: The @nytimes reports that the US plan was to put Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in as leader -- yes, the same Ahmadinejad who was both extremist and a bit crazy. I interviewed Ahmadinejad when he was Iran's president and can't imagine the why the US would possibly support him. And then in any case, the air strike that was supposed to free him from house arrest ended up injuring him.... nytimes.com/2026/05/19/us/…

Israel has gained 1,000 square kilometers of territory since October 7, 5% of what it had in 1949. It has emerged from this tragedy stronger than ever.

Mahmoud is in Gaza, living in a small tent with his wife, their three children, and his parents, seven people sharing one fragile shelter, trying to hold their lives together under impossible conditions. Mahmoud has thalassemia. That means he needs a blood transfusion every two weeks just to stay alive. He also lives with a disability in his right leg that causes him constant pain and could be helped by joint replacement surgery he has no way to access. On top of the transfusions, he needs blood tonics, blood thinners, and treatment for skin conditions, none of which his family can afford. They have no steady income. Feeding the children nutritious food is a daily struggle. Paying for the medications that keep Mahmoud alive feels impossible. And yet, despite everything, he keeps holding on, for his wife, for his kids, for the hope that things can get better. 🙏 chuffed.org/project/179102…

I agree that the Strip must be fully demilitarized for any future rebuilding of Gaza. That said, good luck with that. The current plan for Gaza isn't going anywhere partly because the powers that be refuse to acknowledge that the Arabs of the holy land live in conditions that justify their desire for their Kalashnikovs.

This clan in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya area is parading its weapons through the streets, using children and teenagers to broadcast “who is boss.” Their behavior is not separate from Hamas’s ecosystem of coercion; it reinforces the same culture of thuggery, violence, and lawlessness in which Hamas thrives, and the armed‑resistance mythology is sustained. These weapons are not aimed at Israel, nor are they intended to challenge Hamas. In fact, some clan members can be heard boasting that they are ready to confront an anti‑Hamas militia in the north. More dangerously, this arsenal exists to intimidate the local population, undermine any future authority’s monopoly on force, and perpetuate a culture that glorifies violence and produces criminals who can easily drift into terrorism. Gaza has seen this pattern repeatedly: petty criminals “redeem” themselves by joining armed groups and rebranding their violence as “resistance.” Disarmament must therefore begin with these clans and their stockpiles. Hamas itself routinely cites clan munitions as a reason it refuses to disarm, claiming it cannot give up its weapons while these groups keep theirs, a dynamic that guarantees future chaos and revenge cycles. Gaza cannot rebuild or move forward while scenes like this remain normalized. They must be removed from public life and from the societal imagination if Gaza is ever to have a stable, lawful, and hopeful future.

Having verified a number of Palestinians in Gazan now - along with my team - I am very concerned about the spread of disease and malnutrition in Gaza. Family after family has one or another child or elderly person with a serious disease. (We verify all this.) Public health in Gaza was surprisingly strong before the "war." With the Israelis limiting the entry of food and medicine, prices sky high, and the population overwhelmingly living in squalor in tents, conditions continue to deteriorate.

@TrisH0x2A I mean, I guess, but this case is low-level enough. Not like a simple stride prefetcher can’t make this loop fast, and C still presents a clean mental model that’s good enough most of the time.

C is not a low level language ACM Queue published this in 2018 and people are still arguing about it the idea is simple C was low level in 1972 when machines like the PDP-11 mapped code almost directly to instructions modern CPUs are completely different caches branch prediction SIMD out of order execution the C abstract machine cannot see or control most of that it cannot see the cache cannot express prefetching cannot directly control vectorization so performance depends on the compiler being smart enough to optimize the same argument C developers often criticize in higher level languages
