@TimQMLCNorthVic @SO0PERSALAD @mattyglesias I think I do, but multiple people in this thread are adamant that there significant differences between the two that require consideration to have an informed opinion on energy policy. The differences I'm aware of and have articulated dont seem all that big in the grand scheme.

Occurs to me today that I don’t actually know what diesel is with any specificity. It’s, um, kind of like gasoline but also different? Trucks use it. And Europeans? Freight trains?

@SO0PERSALAD @mattyglesias Knowing the nuances between gasoline and diesel arent all that important. This is like saying someone shouldnt have an opinion on nuclear energy if they dont know the differences between Uranium-235 and Thorium.

@frickybricky123 @BrodieOnLinux Are they though? Or are we just deliberately underestimating the size of the illegal cigarette market for political purposes? I reckon we’ve pushed though the low and are well on our way back up..,

@yamanojyo Interestingly (or not) “Give and take” apparently comes from the system of handicapping horse racing with heavier weights for faster horses. All idiomatic expressions come from somewhere originally…

Pippa Starr - Let's Improve Vaping Education! 🇦🇺
When Arthur Laffer, the expert economist who literally invented the “Laffer Curve” feels compelled to explain to the Australian Government Inquiry Into Illicit Tobacco Crisis: “The evolving pattern of decreasing revenue and an increasing illicit market observed in Australia’s tobacco sector is impossible to reconcile with the claim that successive increases are still operating in a ‘win–win’ range.”, , hence offering a basic lesson in economics, then its bloody clear that there in no more excuses for the continued absurdities of current failed policy! @ALIVEadvocacy @Algore09algor @SincDavidson @_davidlimbrick @mattjcan @AngusTaylorMP @Anne_Ruston @BenFordhamLive

@CushingAgnes @Dittloff4Sense Doesn’t matter if you believe in “bad” genes or not - they believe in you… Many behavioural traits are hard-wired to the individual. We can write code over the top but we’re stuck with the limitations of the system. Tabula Rasa is not real.

@TimQMLCNorthVic @Dittloff4Sense We can talk about lead and other toxicants that cause damage and bring impulsivity and other issues with it. Do I believe in bad genes , no I do not.

Rare Andrew bolt W amid a sea of boomer takes. If BRS is innocent he will be found so and the Pell acquittal proves we still have rule of law. If it was never prosecuted he would live in the shadow of the defamation result forever. If he killed outside ROE then it is murder.

ANDREW BOLT: Defending Ben Roberts-Smith is being made a test of our patriotism. But these allegations could not be swept under the carpet and our response to them is a measure of both our integrity and loyalty to Australian values. > bit.ly/4tyDI9E

@CushingAgnes @Dittloff4Sense Yep. Some are born “bad”. We can’t fix it but in some cases we can moderate it with nurture. And as originally stated, in some circumstances these genes are useful so we don’t want them expunged entirely. But we’d be mad to keep letting these repeat offenders out to offend again.

@Dittloff4Sense @CushingAgnes Maybe it should be three strikes, but there is clearly a point at which it’s insane to let people out just to reoffend. Mad, Bad & Sad, and the first two types of need to be removed from causing more harm to the rest of us.

I don't think that's reflective of recidivism data; often it isn't the first time in prison that marks the inflection point where someone is able to desist into an identity or life that doesn't incorporate offending. Warehousing repeat offenders, in the sense of "people who have been to prison more than once" would be an even more insane waste of money than the spend we already do. I would be happy to talk to you more about this in depth the next time we have the opportunity. There are people for whom rehabilitation is a waste of time, but I don't think the cutoff is where you currently place it.

@Dittloff4Sense @CushingAgnes For the record I think we should put loads of resources into rehabilitation of first time crime. But the system should then be geared to trying to warehouse repeat offenders for as long as possible, with little effort on rehabilitation. To keep them away from the rest of us.

@TimQMLCNorthVic @Dittloff4Sense Do you want to sterilize people in prisons? We don’t have genes that determine behavioral outcome.I have never seen any study that convinced me nurture wasn’t a factor.Your tangent is insane.

@caracal_fandom One of the big problems with Labor in Australia is their “no cross floor” pledge binding MPs to bad policy. Also doesn’t help that the bulk of their MPs are either former on-the-take union hacks or the evil retarded socialists who climbed over the less evil retarded socialists…

@caracal_fandom If you ban floor crossing you don’t have a parliamentary democracy any more. Might as well save on salaries and just give all the votes to the party leader and then check back every 3-4 years to see how it’s going…
