While in Tokyo 🇯🇵 , I also had highly productive exchanges with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ryo Nakamura @MofaJapan_en,  @jica_direct_en Senior VP Hara Shohei, senior government officials, and Members of the @UNOPS-Japan #Parliamentary Association, including former Prime Minister @shigeruishiba and former Minister of Defense @gen_nakatani (Chairman of the Parliamentary Association). We discussed the crisis in the Strait of #Hormuz, the situation in #Gaza, #Sudan and #Ukraine, and how our partnership leverages @UNOPS expertise in infrastructure, procurement, and project management to respond effectively.

Japan 🇯🇵 is a strong advocate for multilateralism and the international rule of law. This week in Tokyo, in addition to the UN Chief Executives meeting #UNCEB, we also celebrated the 70 years of Japan–UN cooperation – a vital partnership that has supported millions globally. We were welcomed by Prime Minister @takaichi_sanae. I was honoured to present to Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu @MofaJapan_en - in a meeting  with UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres and colleagues from across the UN system - the tangible results of @UNOPS partnership with Japan supporting vulnerable communities affected by conflict and crisis. In places like Afghanistan, Sudan, Gaza, West Bank, Yemen, Myanmar and beyond, our work together is helping to address urgent needs, build resilience, and advance sustainable development.

Glad to join the @UN Chief Executives meeting (CEB) in Tokyo 🇯🇵, chaired by SG @antonioguterres. In the current polycrisis context we engaged in crucial discussions on peace, sustainable development, climate, technology, equality and UN reform. No room for complacency. It’s time to scale-up and speed-up multilateral action.

Fascinating visit to #Tunisia's Charles-Nicolle Hospital today, following a productive meeting with Health Minister Dr. Mustapha Ferjani. At the hospital, I saw a highly specialized surgical robot – procured by @UNOPS_AFRNord – that’s a first of its kind in Tunisia’s public health system and will significantly improve clinical outcomes for patients. The robot is part of a @WorldBankGroup -financed initiative that’s helping strengthen capacity and resilience of Tunisia’s health system, reaching +75 hospitals across the country. A great example of the impactful work @UNOPS is delivering with partners in the area of health, for the people of Tunisia. 🏥🦾

A pleasure to meet with His Excellency Mr. Samir Abdelhafidh, #Tunisia's Minister of Economy and Planning. For more than 20 years, @UNOPS has been working in Tunisia to enhance public and social services and advance the country’s national development priorities – from green employment, to healthcare and improved access to basic services. UNOPS is ready to expand our support in capacity building and implementation, with a focus on infrastructure and public procurement, to serve communities across the country.

Very productive meeting with my friend @fbirol, Executive Director of @IEA. Today we discussed: 🚢the crisis on energy and food security caused by the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz and the role of our @UN Task Force on a confidence-building Mechanism for the transit of fertilizers and related raw materials; ⚡️the collaboration between @IEA and @UNOPS on energy grids, storage and clean cooking particularly in fragile contexts.

Timely discussion today at the @OECDdev Future of Development Co-operation Conference. Here’s what I told the session👇 The world is facing record levels of armed conflicts, inequality, and economic instability. Around the world, people are living the impacts of climate change. While people’s needs are sharply increasing, the resources to address them are dwindling. In this era of polycrisis, we cannot rely on traditional ways of working. It’s time for financing models and policies to evolve and adapt to change and crises. And that’s only half the journey. To advance sustainable development and address multiple crises, we must close the gap between ambition and action – building capacity to implement and deliver tangible results for the communities we serve. My thanks to the fellow panellists for an insightful exchange. #FDC2026

Always glad to be back to #PSIA @SciencesPo in Paris. With the Dean @AranchaGlezLaya we discussed the polycrisis context, the need for strong multilateral cooperation and the real focus on impactful and practical solutions on the ground. Then - in a great discussion moderated by @julienserre with lots of enthusiasm and interest by the students - I spoke about #UN efforts to facilitate safe passage of fertilizers through the Strait of Hormuz and what's at stake for millions of people around the world.    To the students and researchers: Thanks for your engagement and perspectives on these critical issues.

Time is running out. A third of the world's fertilizers normally pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Without a solution, we could be facing a global food crisis within weeks – one that will surely hit the most vulnerable people the hardest. It's time to act. Fertilizers and related raw material must be able to transit through the Strait. My interview with @AFP 👇 bit.ly/4dCviJi

Supply chain disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have deeply impacted countries across Asia, especially those in the Assoc. of Southeast Asian Nations. Heavily reliant on fertilizer imports, #ASEAN is facing severe shortages and an exponential increase in costs. For several countries, this could cause a significant fall in agricultural production and drive up food prices. Today in New York, with @ICCSecGen John Denton, I met with Ambassadors and reps from all 11 ASEAN members to discuss these challenges, and the concept of a UN Mechanism to facilitate safe transit of fertilizers and related raw materials. Food security for millions of people is at stake 🌾 The #UN is ready to act. @iccwbo

Today I joined the Ministerial Meeting of the #MED9++ Countries co-chaired by Italy and Croatia for important discussions on the urgency of securing safe passage of fertilizers through the Strait of Hormuz, to prevent a far reaching and devastating food crisis. I spoke of the @UN's commitment and readiness to facilitate access to fertilizers and related raw materials through an effective monitoring and verification Mechanism that's built on trust. Accountability and transparency are key to its design. @UNOPS

This report raises a critical issue. In our highly interconnected world, digital infrastructure has become the backbone of essential services, from healthcare, to finance, to emergency response. And while the benefits are clear, the growing interdependence exposes significant risks: a large-scale disruption could cascade across critical sectors much faster than we are prepared for – with devastating consequences for people around the world.   Well worth a read! 👇 @sciencespo @ITU @UNDRR
