From the lightbulb to the airplane, American innovation has always moved the country forward. Ahead of America’s 250th anniversary, we’re sharing stories from national parks that preserve the legacy of the inventors, entrepreneurs, and visionaries who helped shape our nation.
Human flight became reality on a cold morning in 1903, when two self-taught bicycle mechanics, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright, lifted off for 12 seconds and 120 feet.
Through teamwork, persistence, and a willingness to solve problems others thought impossible, they overcame one of humanity’s greatest challenges.
The airplane changed everything. It shrank distances, turned days-long journeys into hours, and helped build the modern global economy.
What they achieved still shapes how we move, connect, and see the world today.
Their story is preserved at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where visitors can walk the ground where flight began and the world changed.

The United States condemns yesterday’s drone attack on Khartoum airport and other civilian sites, reportedly committed by the RSF. Civilian objects must not be targeted. Civilian airports are especially critical for the movement of humanitarian supplies and personnel. Attacks like these create yet another hindrance for desperately needed humanitarian access. Such attacks must stop; the belligerents must accept a humanitarian truce, move toward a permanent ceasefire, and facilitate the transition to a civilian-led government on the basis of an inclusive national dialogue. They must also recognize that there is no military solution to this deadly conflict. External support to either side in Sudan’s conflict must end immediately and unequivocally; any continued assistance that enables the fighting will bear direct responsibility for prolonging the conflict and the suffering of the Sudanese people.

ISIS-DRC has carried out brutal attacks against civilians in eastern DRC, including targeted violence against Christian communities. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The reported attacks in Beni on the night of May 5–6 underscore the urgency of this threat. The United States remains committed to working with the DRC and its neighbors to advance peace and prosperity in the Great Lakes region. We stand in solidarity with Christian communities facing violence and persecution.

I greatly enjoyed my visit to @WitsUniversity, which consistently ranks as one of the premier universities in South Africa, and has deep connections with the United States.
In my meeting with Vice Chancellor Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi and university leadership, we discussed our strong and growing partnership, including Wits’s role as home to the Africa Centre for the Study of the United States (ACSUS) and the IBM Research Lab.
I also genuinely appreciated the chance to engage with bright and inquisitive international relations students on U.S. foreign policy.
Thank you for welcoming me on your historic campus. 🇺🇸🇿🇦
