Hungary’s recent and historic election ended the repressive rule of Russia leaning Prime Minister Victor Orbán. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Hungarian Caucus, I cheer with Hungarian Americans thrilled at Prime Minister Péter Magyar's victory for Liberty in Hungary. Bravo! Onward!

There is no good explanation for this Administration to quietly lift sanctions on Russia late on a Friday night. Congress and the American people need immediate answers. We must not help Russia fund its illegal war in Ukraine and aid Iranian attacks on American troops.

Bessent just a few days ago: “"We will not be renewing the general license on Russian oil and Iranian oil. That was oil that was on the water prior to March 11th. All that has been used.”

Yesterday, I met with the Ukrainian Prime Minister (@Svyrydenko_Y) to reaffirm strong U.S. support for Ukraine. As Co-Chair of the Congressional @UkraineCaucus, I am calling for stronger sanctions on Russia as it deepens cooperation with Iran in ways that destabilize global security and threaten U.S. forces and allies. We must stand firmly with Ukraine.

Led a bipartisan @UkraineCaucus meeting with PM @Svyrydenko_Y. Ukraine has proven its people have the ingenuity to be a security provider on the world stage. It remains firmly in America’s interest to work closely with our Ukrainian allies. It is time for sanctions to pressure Russia to end its war!

Today, I met with H.E. Yuliia @Svyrydenko_Y, Prime Minister of Ukraine, alongside my fellow Co-Chairs of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus. Our meeting came in the immediate aftermath of one of Russia’s largest and deadliest attacks of the year. In a single night, Putin launched nearly 300 attack drones, 19 ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles across Ukraine—killing at least 17 people, wounding more than 100 others, and once again striking civilian areas. This is what Putin’s war continues to be: the deliberate terrorizing of a sovereign and free people. We pray for the people of Ukraine, and we stand firmly with them. Now is the time to increase pressure, not ease it. We must pass my Peace Through Strength Against Russia Act, choke off the resources fueling the Kremlin’s war machine, intensify efforts to bring home every Ukrainian child Russia has stolen, and remain united in pursuit of a free Ukraine and a just and lasting peace.

🇺🇦🇺🇸 Thank you, Congressman @BradSherman ! Hungary's election was a victory for democracy and a loss for Putin. An anti-NATO, anti-Ukraine government that embraced authoritarianism was resoundingly defeated by the Hungarian people. That matters, not just for Budapest, but for Europe and for Ukraine. The U.S. should support democracy and the will of the Hungarian people. We stand with that position completely. 🔴 Do Not Lift Sanctions on Russia: 👉 amukr.org/do-not-lift-sa… #StandUpWithUkraine #SupportUkraine #SanctionRussia #RussianWar #RussianWarInUkraine #Hungary
Congressman Brad Sherman@BradSherman

The voters of #Hungary have spoken and the U.S. should support democracy and the will of the Hungarian people. The U.S. must back the timely swearing in of Prime Minister-elect Magyar, despite the Trump Administration’s attempt to interfere in this election through campaigning for the Orban regime. Yesterday’s election results were a victory for democracy and a loss for Putin. They’re a reminder that an anti-liberal, anti-NATO, anti-Ukraine, and anti-LGBTQ+ government that embraces authoritarianism can still be resoundingly defeated – something America can learn from.

🇺🇦🇺🇸 @RepMarcyKaptur and @RepDonBacon introduced the BLOCK PUTIN Act. Thank you! Hungary has been blocking EU sanctions on Russia and obstructing aid to Ukraine for years. @RepMarcyKaptur and @RepDonBacon decided to change that. The bill would hold senior Hungarian officials accountable for enabling Russian influence and blocking European support for Ukraine. Bipartisan. Concrete. Long overdue. 🔴 Do Not Lift Sanctions on Russia: 👉 amukr.org/do-not-lift-sa… 🔗 kaptur.house.gov/media-center/p… 📷 Carlos Osorio / AP | Greg Nash #StandUpWithUkraine #SupportUkraine #SanctionRussia #RussianWar

I want to clear this up as I’ve seen this repeated on here. In 2023 Congress overwhelmingly passed, on a bipartisan basis, a law preventing any U.S. president from unilaterally withdrawing us from NATO without congressional approval. Big admirer of your work, @Billbrowder
Sir William Browder KCMG@Billbrowder

Sounds like the table is being set for the US to withdraw from NATO. Not that this wasn’t obvious before, but it’s now being said pretty explicitly

I just heard that my Republican colleagues met with members of the Russian Duma, with @RepLuna giving them a private tour of our Capitol yesterday—including @SpeakerJohnson's offices! Let's be clear: Russia illegally invaded Ukraine in 2022. Military aid and sanctions by the United States and our allies have been the ONE thing standing in Putin’s way of rebuilding the Soviet Union. Foreign political operatives of our adversaries should NEVER be allowed on Capitol Hill. This 'visit' opened the doors to a massive #security threat to the Speaker, to our Congress, and to democracy itself. All while Trump funds the Russian war machine by removing sanctions on their oil this week. This yet another extension of the Trump administration’s moral equivalency between Russia and Ukraine in this war.

Met with the Co-Chairs of @UkraineCaucus: @RepMarcyKaptur, @RepBrianFitz, and @RepMikeQuigley. I thanked them for their unwavering support, including their March 13, 2026 statement opposing any temporary easing of sanctions against russia. Sustained pressure is essential to deprive russia of the resources needed to continue the war.

‼️ New findings from the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab show that major Russian energy companies, including Gazprom and Rosneft, are directly linked to networks responsible for the detention, indoctrination, and militarization of Ukrainian children. The Ukraine Congressional Caucus is calling on the Administration to halt any sanctions relief for Russian oil entities. According to the report, nearly 2,200 of the more than 20,000 abducted Ukrainian children have been held in facilities tied to these companies. One such site, the “Prometheus Camp,” is reportedly connected to state-linked oil interests that could benefit from sanctions relief. “Returning these children requires dismantling the infrastructure behind these crimes—including camps, networks, and the entities supporting them. If companies like Gazprom and Rosneft helped fund or operate these systems, they must face full international accountability,” the statement from the UA Caucus says, signed by - @RepMarcyKaptur (D-OH-09), @RepBrianFitz (R-PA-01), @RepMikeQuigley (D-IL-05), @RepJoeWilson (R-SC-02), @RepGregLandsman (D-OH-01) Full statement: 👇 kaptur.house.gov/media-center/p…

"We call on the Administration to reverse course by keeping all sanctions in place and to work with Congress to advance bipartisan legislation that strengthens pressure on the Kremlin," - Ukrainian Congressional Caucus leaders reacted to the Trump Administration’s decision to ease sanctions on Russian oil.
