After 5+ years in 🏝️ Miami, I’ve moved back to the 🌁 Bay Area! We moved to: 1) Maximize the number of founders I’m around: The Bay Area still has the highest concentration of founders of any geo, by leaps and bounds. So much of pre-seed and seed investing is driven by the people founding these businesses and getting to know them in person is a critical step in my process. It’s been incredibly energizing to be back these last few weeks and meet/see so many founders and co-investors in person. If you’re around, please text, e-mail, DM — I’d love to catch up! 2) Raise our kids: Florida became increasingly hostile for same-sex families and the lgbtq+ community, especially in the public school system. During our last week in Miami, another two-mom family in our neighborhood had their home graffiti'd with anti-gay, racist slurs. I’m excited to raise our two kids in a place where families like ours are more common and embraced. We’ve only been back a month, but I already feel a huge weight lifted off my shoulders! 🏳️‍🌈 Miami will always be my home and I’m rooting for the city to succeed. We’ve always been plagued by a “hype over substance” imbalance. The caliber of folks that have made Miami their home and spent professional time there since 2020 is a meaningful change for the city, helping tip the scales and offset the massive brain drain we’ve historically had. I'll be back to visit often!

Looking through the investments I've led over the last decade, there seems to be no correlation between the deal's initial "hotness" and the results. If anything, there's a negative correlation.

In 2011, @garrytan encouraged me to apply to YC when I ran into him at an event, a nudge that changed the trajectory of my life. Over the course of a few weeks during S11, @paulg and Garry helped us pin down my first startup's onboarding flows - a treasured lesson as a first-time founder. Garry then bet on us via @Initialized's very first fund. Thirteen years later, we finally had the opportunity to work closely together again as one of Garry's companies in W24. We'll be sending out invites soon, so stay tuned. By the way, YC as it currently exists in 2024 is incredible. This batch was intense compared to S11 and S16, and was designed and executed near-flawlessly to help the youngest companies obsessively focus and ship even faster. The S24 application deadline is Apr 22nd. If you're thinking about applying, you really should - there is no better place to start a new project. My DMs are open if you want me to review your application, to answer questions, or if you want to try out jo. BTW, there are at least five YC alum (including another S11 founder!) in this group 3A & 3J photo, which makes me immensely happy!
