On this day in 1982, the 22nd Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment carried out the Raid on Pebble Island, supported by HMS Glamorgan and HMS Broadsword. Reminiscent of SAS operations of the Second World War, the successful raid disabled 11 Argentine aircraft. 🇫🇰🇬🇧 #Falklands44

I will dip the Union flag 🇬🇧 later to remember the ever so patriotic Terry Hutt who passed away recently. I met him on the Mall a few times (at least) on various events 'flying the flag' . He was a great crowd ambassador. My deepest condolences to his family. 🇬🇧

From a population of just 2,300, more than 150 Falkland Islanders volunteered for service in the Second World War, however 25 Islanders were killed in the fighting. 🇫🇰 More than 200 Falklands children were evacuated to Camp, the rural constituency of the Islands.

On the 81st anniversary of VE Day, we reflect on the contribution of the Falkland Islands in helping to win the war against tyranny. 🇫🇰 From the service and sacrifice of so many Islanders to the support the Falklands gave to the Allied forces, a short thread. 🧵 #VEDay81

Great Western Railways services will transfer into public ownership from 13 December 2026. This is another significant moment as the government continues to bring services back into public ownership and put passengers, not shareholders, at the heart of our railways.

On 21 February 1967, Charlie — widely regarded as the last working shunting horse on British Rail — retired from Newmarket station in Suffolk. After 18 years of moving railway wagons and horseboxes, his final job was almost poetic: he shunted the very wagon that would take him away to retirement. The end of an era on British rails.

Former British Special Boat Service (SBS) operator Jason “Foxy” Fox training with a rebreather. The SBS is the UK’s Tier 1 maritime special forces unit, and the sister unit of the more publicly known 22nd SAS. Unlike standard scuba gear, a rebreather recycles exhaled air, producing no bubbles on the surface. This allows operators to approach enemy ships, oil rigs, or coastal targets completely undetected, sometimes for hours underwater. It is one of the most demanding and technical skills in all of special operations. Fox joined the Royal Marines Commandos at just 16 years old in 1992, passed UK Special Forces Selection in 2001, and spent the next decade inside the SBS. He served as a swimmer and diver, and was an explosives expert on hostage rescue, counterterrorism, and counternarcotics operations around the world. Medically discharged in 2012 with PTSD, he went on to co-found Rock2Recovery to help veterans heal, and later became one of the original instructors on the TV show “SAS: Who Dares Wins.”
