I don’t think it’s mostly about regulatory capture by European players - that is a problem in many other contexts, but not this one. The UNECE has a much more fundamental lack of expertise in this realm, a lack of flexibility for updatable and fast-moving technology and a lack of creativity on how to enable technology testing and adoption with safety/speed/scale.
JaviGMD@javiergmd

@rohanspatel As has been for many years… the EU won’t allow anything to Tesla until the German automakers catch up and can offer similar features… It’s disgusting that even basic Autopilot can’t do high speed tight turns in highways in Europe because restrictions on Gs or turn radius, etc

@tmornini @KRoelandschap Just because the way things are currently going at the UNECE GRVA meeting. I also believe from now on there will be much less pressure on regulators for FSD, as the secretary of the task force on ADAS has just quit his job (he worked for Tesla to bring FSD to Europe).

@rad202 @alex_avoigt No, this legislation will unlock deployment of a wide array of level 4 automation down the line when secondary legislation is set up ('25/26). It unfortunately does not improve the situation for level 2 ADAS. We are working with legislators to improve this situation though.

@alex_avoigt @VImpeMarc will this allow Tesla to roll out FSD (supervised) to the UK faster than it otherwise would have to, if waiting for UNECE homologation?

The 🇬🇧 UK could be a candidate in Europe where Tesla FSD could have a chance of being rolled out faster than in the 🇪🇺 EU. A few parts are suspicious to me for instance that the bill talks about automated driving instead of autonomous driving and those are not the same. Time will tell and we will see, as the devil is in the detail and the UK might try to keep Tesla out to give domestic companies like Wayve a head start that otherwise won't be able to compete.
Wayve@wayve_ai

📜 Transport history has been made today and we are thrilled to see that the Automated Vehicle's Bill has received Royal Assent. 🚘✅ This legislation creates an innovative legal framework for the safe deployment of this technology, providing vital clarity around liability and consumer protection. We're proud to have been a part of the journey, read more here: gov.uk/government/new…

Legalising the ⁦@Tesla⁩ system in the UK and EU member states requires a change to UN regulations governing so-called “driver controlled assistance systems”. A task force is currently working on changing the regulations by September next year, telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/…

@alex_avoigt @wholemars This is inaccurate, Alex. You're confusing requirements imposed on level 4 systems with requirements that would be imposed on a level 2 system. UN homologation rules are the primary restriction at this time. We're working with regulators towards changes.

While this is good news, the current German law for AVs has so many restrictions that it would have to be rewritten from scratch to allow FSD (under supervision) and that will take a long time. They for instance demand right now an oversight and G5 connection claiming that a human controller must be able to interfere if something goes wrong which shows how little understanding they have how AVs work. There is also a lot of misinformation among the public, politicians and of course the car manufacturers will do anything to not allow it as it would put their sales under massive pressure. As much as I am pleased that it is being tested here in Germany, and I have no doubt that it will work very well, I don't think it will be approved anytime soon.

The past 8 years at Tesla have been filled with every emotion - but the feeling I have today is utmost gratitude. To our unbelievable customers and fans - I’m inspired by your passion and impact on @Tesla and the mission. To @elonmusk for giving me the chance and empowering me to lead big initiatives at the company. To the broader Tesla team - the never-say-die attitude and scrappiness is what makes the place special. To the best policy/bizdev team in the business, I’m in awe of all that you’ve accomplished. I’m biased, but no group of people has won as many critical policy fights in the push for sustainable energy and transport and against well funded vested interests. You all are my lifelong friends and I’ll always have your back. My immigrant parents worked their asses off and as a result I’m the luckiest dude. Lucky to have been a part of @BarackObama’s campaign/administration, and truly honored to have worked at @Tesla to positively changing multiple industries. My plans are to be a recess monitor for my 2nd grade daughter, practice my violin, go to a bunch of bucket list sporting events and take my very patient wife on some long intended travel. Excited for the future!

@Scrin_Mais @mgoetzke @wholemars Loving all the creative ideas. European countries have particular national rules about who can perform testing and what vehicles can be used. In the EU, bringing a vehicle out of compliance impacts the registration and insurance, and requires specific approval or license plates.

Every @Tesla leader has gotten emails from @elonmusk (and each other) with solely a forward of a X post that has a good suggestion from one of you. When I first joined Tesla I thought it was wild that our CEO/Technoking would action items from X by literally forwarding them, usually with a ? or ! as the subject line. Now I think it’s kind of crazy *not* to act on the best ideas(especially from our customers) with speed and seriousness. I’m proud to work at a company where the leadership tries to take the best ideas from anywhere (customers, interns, regulators) and integrate them quickly into our products and services.

Tesla, together with its retail shareholders, solving problems and moving forward to a better future. Disruption like never before, moving at the speed of Space Travel…….. No wonder Legacy Auto, Big Oil, Legacy News, and so many other special interests hate them and everything about what they do. No one else has ever included the customer feedback into the product like this, resulting in growth never seen before. Not that I can remember, not in my life. Thanks @rohanspatel for including us!

While I’ve got your attention @rohanspatel, any chance you could confirm which mapping tool Tesla uses to verify road speed limits? We have a couple of sections of highway that used to be roadwork zones that have long since finished but the speed zones haven’t been updated accordingly on the map so the car slams on the brakes suddenly and drops from 110km/h down to 40km/h thinking it’s in a roadwork zone! It’s so dangerous and is going to cause an accident. No one seems to be able to confirm who to contact to get this fixed!

@AlexRoy144 @wholemars My dad, who doesn’t have the use of his legs, got FSD 12 for his car. We went out today for lunch and tested it, he said multiple times, “it drives better than me”. He loved it. For people like my dad, it’s almost heaven sent. This is his driving set up.

Hi Rohan, hi @elonmusk, hi @VImpeMarc, Then please take the following suggestions into consideration making your cars even better. They especially addressed small to medium things (not major steps like FSD) to make the cars even better. All things are solely software features that your engineers can adapt: - Extending the auto-dim feature of mirrors to use camera detection whether bright light source is behind so it makes the feature really useful instead of dimming the screens at night without a reason. This especially will make reverse parking more easy at night if you don’t want to rely on the cameras solely or will allow easier viewing though mirrors at night when no one is behind - add the function to slow down before a speed limit (or entering villages) instead afterwards to extend the amount of energy that can be regained from the slowing process instead of a hard braking. This additionally will improve safety as the car will not drive into Citys with 100kmh. Add an icon that will show the slowing process (the two limits with an arrow for example) - Use a statistical approach to identify all kind of traffic signs. The cars could use camera data and this approach to improve map data and adapt to changed/temporary trsffic signs more easy. Add human checks for cases where the relevance of a new/changed traffic sign cannot be proved certainly with the statistics. And please use it for all kind of signs not only speed limits (this will significantly improve the map data and might be a key benefit for the cars ability to drive autonomously Thank you for being the best and most innovative car manufacturer of all times providing superior safe cars and affordable cars making the world A better place!

@stnor @Seattle_RT @elektrotimmy @rohanspatel @eurotechjunkie There is relatively minimal delay in application of UN rules once adopted and in force. UN R157 and ADS regulations are a special case because they require traffic law to be updated to enable hands-free or driverless operation. An increasing number of countries have now done so.

@DCniert @rohanspatel @NuovaRealta Thanks for the feedback! I posted on this recently, but unfortunately Norway is in the same boat as the rest of Europe. Norway follows the same homologation rules through the EEA agreement with the EU and actively participates in the related DCAS drafting discussions.

@rohanspatel @NuovaRealta @VImpeMarc Thanks for the open dialogue around this - really love how Tesla has opened up communications lately! Some time ago Musk said that FSD beta would come to Canada next, then Norway 🇳🇴 As Norway is not part of the EU is there any way to get FSD (supervised) to Norway?

@UKsyfyfan @rohanspatel @NuovaRealta Ford's exemption approval doesn't guarantee approval for others, as the burden is now on the UK authorities to introduce general homologation rules for such systems. There's a difference in c FSD and Blue Cruise that are meaningful capabilities in the context of these processes.

@WillFealey @rohanspatel @NuovaRealta The Autonomous Vehicles Bill in the UK is an exciting development in the context of ADS, and for sure the UK has one of the better testing regimes in Europe. It's still unclear what ADS homologation rules will apply - we want to see progress there! For level 2, DCAS will apply.
