And at the watch party you will ask the organizer if he’s from Cape Verde. He will say yes, from Praia. And you’ll say oh! I lived there for two years. I was a teacher. And he will ask, “What’s your name?” You will tell him and he will say, “You were my teacher.”

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜’𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗖 There is a massive amount of potential liquidity coming back to venture funds over the next several quarters and years. Between SpaceX, Anthropic, Wiz, Groq, Ramp, Databricks, OpenAI, Cursor, Anduril, Stripe, and others, we could see a monster wave of liquidity in the coming quarters/years. And a lot of that liquidity is likely to accrue to a relatively small number of firms and it will be a major validation moment for the best firms that had the conviction and access to build meaningful positions in these companies. It also can't be ignored that it will likely create extraordinary personal wealth for a number of GPs, especially the senior partners at the firms with the largest exposure. In some cases, this could be 9- or even 10-figure outcomes for individuals. Historically, when that has happened, some GPs, quietly start to hang up the cleats. Not always immediately, but the wheels start to move, and after 10, 15, or 20 years in the seat and combined with generational wealth, some people naturally reassess what they want the next chapter to look like. That makes succession one of the more interesting under-discussed topics in venture right now. For the firms that are about to be “minted” by this cycle, the next question may not just be how much capital they return, or how large the next fund is. It may be whether they can successfully transition leadership to the next generation. Some firms have done this incredibly well. Benchmark has repeatedly reinvented itself through new generations of partners. Kleiner, after a long transition period, brought in new talent and re-established itself as a leader. Others have found it much harder over time. I don’t know exactly how this plays out, but I would not be surprised to see another wave of senior GP step-backs over the coming years.

Mark your calendars for July 4th and the United States’ 250th birthday!  For only the third time in history, fireworks will launch directly from the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge this July 4th. The firework show is set to begin around 9:30pm. We want everyone in San Francisco and the Bay Area to come to our city and enjoy the free show along our amazing waterfront.  Plan ahead, take public transit, and make a night of it by exploring our neighborhoods, restaurants, and small businesses before the show. For more info, visit Sf.gov/july4. Let’s go, San Francisco!

30 more seconds of airtime and Kuip would’ve started cursing. Didn’t even try to pass it to Krukow for his final thoughts, lol. #SFGiants

In 1982, this 63-year-old San Francisco native described a version of North Beach he grew up in that doesn’t exist anymore. His name was Dante Benedetti, and he was born and raised in North Beach. He owned a restaurant there called New Pisa, which existed from 1927 to 2003.

$110B is kind of a big round. That's at least 50% of all US VC-backed company fundraising in 8 out the last 11 years. (not sure we should count this as VC, is what I'm saying)

The pandemic fundamentally broke a multi-decade alliance and relationship of trust between teachers’ unions and parent voters. With declining enrollment, it won’t be reparable for more than 1-2 decades and I’m not sure anyone has fully processed what this means politically.

SFUSD teachers are still on strike. They’re asking families not to do the independent study worksheets. They’re also asking families to donate cash to them because they’re not getting paid while on strike. But please keep telling me this is all for the kids.

SF Schools spend $40M/year on RETIRED teachers’ healthcare benefits! The district is in union-created doom loop of shrinking attendance and ballooning costs.
Garry Tan@garrytan

Why are SF schools closed going into a 4th day? SFUSD’s pension spending grew 538% while revenue grew 123%. A $593 billion California pension scheme is why today's teachers can’t get raises and your kids aren’t in school. garryslist.org/posts/the-593-…
