Never be sorry for that which you have no control over. Know that even the agonizing task of sitting back & waiting, while others work, is sometimes "doing something". Remember to look for the helpers & the good, even if you are a first responder.

@marlaseraphine @AdamNMayer Don't forget about regional weather... In addition to other hazards, winds & topography also make LA prone to both tornadoes & extreme fire danger. Granted, LA tornadoes are usually "small" (EF-2 or less), but 56 isn't 0. Also, I wonder if they've ever heard of the canyon effect?

There is a perfectly good reason. The industries centered in Los Angeles do not require it. There are very few corporate headquarters in LA. The nation's biggest media company, Disney, is located there, but it occupies a studio lot in Burbank. Mattel is based out of a 15-story building in El Segundo. The aerospace industry doesn't need skyscrapers. Logistics doesn't need skyscrapers. Downtown Los Angeles has one of the highest vacancy rates in the country. The County of Los Angeles was able to buy the Gas Company Tower for itself after Deloitte vacated it. Skyscrapers are becoming less and less necessary after remote work became standardized, allowing companies to occupy smaller footprints. Only a few industries actually NEED them, primarily finance. LA was never a financial hub, San Francisco was. Skyscrapers benefit centralized cities; LA is one of the least centralized cities in the world. Downtowns typically sprung up in the locations where the earliest settlers entered the city, which for nearly every city, is by navigable water. Water creates land scarcity as well as a premium on land with easy access to it. It is also considered aesthetic. People like to look at it. Early settlers to Los Angeles did not enter by the water. They entered by the railway. The railway deposited them at eastern entrance to the Los Angeles basin, at the terminus of the Santa Monica Mountains and the San Rafael Hills, where a small stream provided fresh water and often catastrophically flooded in the winter. The railway eventually made it to the beaches, but downtown didn't relocate there because THEY WERE FILLED WITH OIL. Santa Monica was once covered in oil derricks, even extending into the water. So this means downtown Los Angeles remained in the northeast corner of the basin. It is not central to anything, and it overlooks a concrete channel filled with brown water most of the year. This is why Los Angeles will never have a skyline that rivals Shanghai. I can't with transplants.

We have requested that President Trump issue an emergency declaration to support response operations in Orange County. For more than 48 hours, @Cal_OES and state agencies have been on the ground supporting impacted communities, protecting public safety, and assisting local officials as response efforts continue. Please continue following guidance from emergency officials.

@DrAliSKhan Wow, seriously? Plants use Carbon Monoxide like humans use oxygen. That's why planted aquariums often require CO2 supplementation in order to survive. Look closer at the data, it's not the CO2 that's the problem.

More tornado footage out of Enid, Oklahoma, and yes it is normal for us to stand outside and watch. When you have lived with them your entire life it’s just part of spring in Oklahoma. The other part that doesn’t make the news is how the entire state kicks into action helping our neighbors. We don’t ask if you’re Democrat or Republican we just help! It’s who we are! Oklahoma Strong 💪🏼

It's an honor to be receiving this year's California River Award from Friends of the River! I've taken a moment to reflect on the notion of rivers as "integrators of change"--from hydrological and human perspectives--during a period of rapid global change. youtube.com/watch?v=CFm0hy…

California Governor's Office of Emergency Services
Ahead of the 2026 fire season, @Cal_OES and @SoCalUSFS_Fire hosted a critical preparedness meeting and static demonstration of FIRIS, which stands for Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System, for regional and local fire service partners in Southern California. The aircraft provides real-time mapping for wildfires and other incidents.
