The IHL & Separated, Missing & Dead: From Law to Practice Masterclass convenes legal, forensic & humanitarian experts to address a key challenge: clarifying the fate of the separated, missing & dead during armed conflict & strengthening responses grounded in IHL & human dignity.

To help ease the suffering of families with missing loved ones, we joined @ZimRedCross, state authorities &legal practitioners in Harare to support families seeking answers. Many face painful legal &admin hurdles while living with the anguish of not knowing their loved ones’ fate

Proceedings have commenced at the commemoration of International Day of the Disappeared, 2025 – Commemorating the missing from Southern Africa. #IDOD2025 @ICRC_SAfrica

On 28 August 2025, We, together with @DOJCD_ZA and @ohchr_sa will commemorate the International Day of the Disappeared in Pretoria, The day helps raise awareness of the plight of the missing, honours their memories and the emotional distress of families, #IDOD2025

On 7 May 2025, we hosted a legal workshop on IHL & the Separated, Missing and Dead with UJ Law and SARChI. It trained LLM students to apply legal frameworks to real cases, building expertise to ensure dignity for the missing & dead in conflict. #IHL #HumanitarianLaw

This week, the ICRC_ACMS, along with 29 national &international organizations took stock of humanitarian forensic programs in Africa. Experts discussed innovative approaches to improve forensic &medicolegal services &the benefits of strategic partnerships for affected communities

From 15-18 October, we are hosting a global military personnel identification conference in Pretoria. The conference will bring together key military personnel from state-armed forces to discuss and share best practices for preventing their personnel from going missing.

We are grateful for the support of the Zambian government led by Hon. Dr. Namani Monze, who joined the symposium participants in calling for a DNA database that can help in humanitarian forensic investigations to aid in resolving missing persons and unidentified human remains.
