@MATTYWOLVES3 Always the optimist which I like. Adding in some reality, while it could lead to cold conditions, it would be mid to late March by the time it flows down. Then becomes a bit messy all round

@TheSnowDreamer South Westerly flows have been non existence this winter, until now. For once, no blow torch mild spells during the depths of winter, albeit no real cold spells either

Meteorological winter ending exceptionally mild… Long drawn southwesterlies. Despite how unsettled it’s been not a wind direction we’ve had much of this winter. Will result in overnight lows close to average daytime highs and maxes closer to April values.

@MATTYWOLVES3 10 months to go This winter, nothing exceptionally mild (for once) and nothing exceptionally cold. Fluctuations between slightly above and slightly below. Milder overall

@TheSnowDreamer There's been a lot of cold periods in Scandinavia in recent years. Bucked a trend as they had many years with pretty mild weather

Parts of N+E Europe have experienced a very cold winter. Oslo 🇳🇴 will have spent 1 month straight subzero this is quite an achievement nowadays, it last got above freezing January 19th. The streak looks to end this weekend a run of 32 days. It’s the 3rd longest of 21st century after 40 day streak in November-December 2010 and just shy of 33 days in December 2009-January 2010. Both winters also featured very cold weather in UK, but we are absent here 🙁

@Petagna are there any drivers that are contributing to Antarctic sea ice doing very this year? Considering the state of climate warming, holding up very well.

The clock is quickly ticking on winter, but high latitudes of northern hemisphere are experiencing the coldest spell of winter. Widespread negative anomalies across #Arctic something we’ve not seen this winter till now. March 2025 experienced a record low sea ice maximum, not at risk again.

@MATTYWOLVES3 A few flakes here but overall another pretty mild winter for England and Wales. Not many frosts and not many snow lying days (if any for most). Parts of Scotland has had a colder winter

And another growing signal of colder members towards the 20th! Your deluded mate, and this red flag system is just to get you more attention! Why don’t you just tell everyone how your famous GWO and positive drivers for winter did this year! Shocking and no better than someone taking weather advice from an app!

Despite the pushback the three red flags were justified. 🚩🚩🚩 A brief 1-2 day colder blip (14th-16th) before the Atlantic rolls back in, this is pretty conclusive within modelling now. Snow mostly confined to northern hills. More rain for the south.

@MATTYWOLVES3 While some element of warming is evident in the strat, your being hopeful if the UK will become significantly colder. Mid Feb is upon us and although a 2018 is always possible, highly unlikely. Temperatures generally will just continue to edge upwards

@Met4CastUK Climate change has had a massive impact on the UK weather, on all seasons. Not just winter. Extreme cold is evident across the globe but the UK has had very few of these. USA and Scandinavia often produce very very cold winter periods

Climate change has ruined UK winters. The pattern we have today would likely have brought about widespread significant snow & blizzards in the 80’s. Alas, we have lots of rain and some hill snow instead. Battleground snowfall scenarios in the UK are becoming increasingly rare along with sustained cold & snowy conditions, especially for lowland southern England, as the planet continues to warm our winters will only get milder and snow will continue to become more restricted / rare. It seems to get proper cold, snowy conditions we need a major splitting SSW. On paper, this winter should have delivered. There has been ample amounts of blocking but the cold as been significantly lacking. Teleconnections & background drivers, including the stratosphere has favoured blocked & cold conditions throughout much of this winter, the blocks have developed, the cold has not. What an awful state of affairs, very real world evidence of climate change.

@CityAndy2 @Met4CastUK I don't think the post is about cold weather not being prevalent in winter. The UK winters have been mild for over 30 years with only a few cold ones

@MATTYWOLVES3 I don't think you can say Climate change hasn't killed our winters. Our winters have predominantly been average or above average for over 30 years with very few cold periods compared to mild periods.Extreme cold is still common, especially in the USA and Scandinavia but not the UK

Huge improvements on the GEFS 12z, looks mainly down to an increased confidence in the energy from the Atlantic heading south into France, opening the door to easterlies, rather than southeasterlies, for the UK this weekend

@TheSnowDreamer That is absolutely staggering, one of the depressing winter stats of climate change that is. Sub 3C isn't even that notable. December has become November V2 and February just a 4th Spring month. To say the UK is due a cold February is an understatement

We haven’t had a properly cold February in 30 years. Which is absolutely insanity, it’s a very sobering statistic. 2018 was cold to an extent of course the end was exceptionally cold but overall nothing on historical terms. The last <3C Feb CET 1996, 2.5C… 2018, 3.1C.
Weather4u2@Weather4u2

@TheSnowDreamer Not had many cold February's in the last 10 years. February mostly a spring month but maybe a cold start this year. Would certainly feel nice to have a February that doesn't get close to 20C

The coming weeks look fascinating from a meteorological perspective. Most including myself at start of winter felt quite cynical about February winter weather in Western Europe. La Niña winters have a greater tendency to become more unsettled and milder later on. With a stratospheric polar vortex to date which has been mainly stronger than average, normally associated with higher chance of westerlies in troposphere. But we have seen a disconnect in lower atmosphere with a believed to be diminishing small window to seize a cold and blocked pattern. However, stratospheric developments are reckoning to reset these expectations. Perhaps we’re getting too ahead of ourselves but February is suddenly looking increasingly interesting from a cold perspective at mid latitudes.
