Calvinist: God controls what you do but you’re still culpable for what you do. Me: I understand you believe God controls what we do and that you think we are still culpable but can you give a rational explanation as to the basis of human culpability given your claim that it’s beyond their control? Calvinist: Me: That isn’t an answer to the question. We have a disagreement over what those verses mean since Christians have interpreted those passages differently since the beginning of the church. I’m asking you to justify your interpretation of those passages given that they leave no basis on which to hold mankind culpable. To just say “because the Bible says so” isn’t an argument. It’s a cop out and a punt to mystery. Defend your interpretation by giving a rational explanation as to why people are culpable for something literally outside of their control or admit your interpretation creates this apparent contradiction and thus other interpretations may just be more accurate given they are rational.
