I've been married for 35 years. With autism, no less. 40 years ago, when we met, I had no idea that I had autism, but I knew I was a little different. And I told her that in our relationship, she would have to go first. I have no "game". I don't flirt. I'm not wired for it. My entire reproductive plan was to just be nice and smart and "hang around" until someone "got me". And she did. And 40 years later, it remains true. I am constantly recalibrating my outward emotion and affection up or down to match what I perceive from others. Even if I -feel- more, I ratchet it down. And then when I receive affection or affirmation, it goes up. You might think that cowardly, or self-protective, and maybe it is. But with ASD, you don't have a "natural sense" of how the other person is magically feeling. You have to go by example. And it's very easy to overstep or overreach if you're not careful.

As an autistic man, flirting and making the first move intentionally makes me feel like I'm engaging in harassment

@ThePrimeagen lol "thruster of the board" is the title we all need real talk though - has AI actually killed the joy or just shifted where we find it? feels like we're still figuring that out

I refer to C and C++ as “C/C++”. I’m fully aware of the language differences. I just keep writing “C/C++” to get extra engagement.

My entire world view was based upon the narrative that if I am skilled enough, I will definitely get realized eventually. Even if school teachers or my parents fail to recognize it, I will pass the exam since I am skilled enough. And that did happen. But then - even if I have failed an exam due to bad luck, I am sure the right recruiters will eventually notice my skills. And that did happen. But then - even if most companies fail to recognize me due to flawed systems, I am sure my team leads, managers, teammates, and further companies will eventually notice my skills and I shall finally be fairly compensated. But then came AI. People are resolving tickets, building features and clearing interviews much faster than actually skilled people, with significantly lesser effort. On paper they're being way more productive. Being skilled enough doesn't get rewarded anymore. Delivering market value does. In a deeply unfair system where everyone is cheating, what can an innocent man do but adapt?

@IAmManware I hear you. Everything is enshittified. Products are shallow because people's mindset has become shallow. Capitalism is eating away the pride in the craft people used to possess. People who argue about adapting to new ways have never felt the "high" of being competent.

@IAmManware As a human your main goal should be learning. if you want to survive you have learn to adapt and you think you not feeling the same spike in your brain as before find something new that interest you end goal should be happy. Adapt only those thing which make ur survival hard.
