@abbenme @grynbaum Just explaining why their home countries won't take them, forcing us to give them to El Salvador. So it's a side effect, not the proximate cause.

Bari Weiss just addressed the 60 Minutes situation on CBS News’s 9 a.m. editorial call. She says the pulled “60” segment on a Salvadoran prison “did not advance the ball.”

@CaralhoPhilly @EoinHiggins_ The segment already features multiple clips of White House officials commenting on it, officials were already offered the chance to comment, and there's no standard or principle that suggests it's necessary for a complete story either in general or in this specific context.

Weiss’s excuse for killing the story falls apart the instant you look at it outside a vacuum but I will give her credit for muddying the waters enough that the nation’s most credulous oafs will believe it
Conor Friedersdorf@conor64

I've published on the CECOT story, I want more Americans to know about it (read my piece!), I want 60 Minutes to cover it, and this memo seems... like normal and plausibly sound reasons to delay its broadcast.

@ombudsman4truth @grynbaum You falsely claimed they were "dangerous cartel members", and SCOTUS already ruled 9-0 that these CECOT deportations are violating due process

@grynbaum The important missing context, besides the fact that these are illegal aliens, not "migrants", is that you can't just deport illegal aliens, you have to have a country willing to take them. Because these particular illegal aliens are dangerous cartel members, no country will take

@gadboit @ArgonGruber @davidbessis Exactly. If they're all the complaint against GEB amounts to it's a huge nothingburger over an offhand phrasing that's not even essential to any particular argument. There are lots of egregious misuses of Godels proof, but none in GEB

@ArgonGruber @davidbessis That's just quibbling though. Hofstadter does understand Gödel's theorem and explains it very well. That's nothing like the real nonsense you hear about Gödel's theorem all the time.

@davidbessis @stanislavfort You keep saying "no clue how it truly functions" but his explanation of Gödels proof is accurate, and outside of that it's unclear what exactly you are alleging. I didn't take him to be making any controversial statements about the nature of math. 🤷‍♂️

@stanislavfort Quite possibly. I have no objection to people having original ideas and sharing them. My issue with GEB is its focus on mathematics while the author has no clue how it truly functions.

Strong disagree here. GEB does *feel like* a phenomenal "big idea book", but at the core it is utterly stupid and will set you back 20 years in your understanding of mathematics and logic. I read it at 17 and loved it, and I do recommend it for this specific usage: as a cool pop math "toy book" for young geeks. But it should come with a public health advisory: the book is fun, well-written, engaging, it is highly stimulating and will teach you a lot of interesting things *BUT* its philosophical premises are idiotic and the author has no clue what he is talking about. I do think having read the book *impaired* my understanding of mathematics and slowed my career.

@davidbessis @AndrewCMyers That musing on paradox doesn't seem to be saying much but also seems pretty orthogonal to the main ideas in the book. What would give me pause is if the key ideas about self reference were mistaken in some fundamental way or if it misrepresented Gödel or something

I don’t deny the Holocaust. It was one of most evil acts in history. A genocide; a campaign of industrialized slaughter of Jews. Now, can you condemn the Gaza genocide? …Oh wait, no you can’t. In fact, you participated in it, as a spokesman for it. The Hague awaits, Eylon!

@FreshPrinceAus @mehdirhasan I don't have more expertise than them. What I would say is that, if this was genocide, it seems inconsistent with everything else we've ever been taught was genocide.

@TeddyWilla70706 @mehdirhasan Well said. The population of Gaza actually GREW since Oct 7, 2023! And that’s according to Hamas’ own biased numbers. There were literally more births than deaths. Calling this a holocaust is patently absurd.

@jrobertsbsbl I thought Nathaniel Lowe was actually pretty good for the Sox down the stretch. He slashed .351/.458/.432 in his final 48 PA to end the year. Started hot, ended hot, with a slump in the middle

@longlive_jahh @JayDeads @DudespostingWs Even that's conceding too much because I think this is good technique *and* genuinely satisfying. Color isn't necessarily better than black and white, but it has a huge advantage due to its richer expressive range.

@JayDeads @DudespostingWs Do you know what technique is? Doing a specific technique and it not sounding good to the ears doesn’t mean anything about opinion you are objectively talented if you can do things like he did becus it’s very advanced. Idk how to explain it but a child wouldn’t be able to do it

@JayDeads @JimC453 @DudespostingWs There absolutely is such a thing as technical sophistication not cashing out as an enjoyable listening experience. But I found this clip deeply satisfying, because it's loaded with good taste textural flourishes. It's the difference between a croissant and wonder bread.

@JimC453 @DudespostingWs Yep. I understand that. Totally mislabeled. My bad. But "good"? "Breathtakingly"? LOL I certainly support your right to think so. Technical jazz only sounds good to people who like technical jazz. I think it sounds like a garbled mess.

@thepine64 website says refurbished pinephone pro is already out of stock! Is that right? I'd been checking the store since I knew the refurbs were going to be listed. If they're truly out of stock, it seems like they sold out extremely fast

@TimONeill007 Bluesky is centralized just like Twitter. (It intends not to be but it is). Mastodon is decentralized, that's why it's hyped. I hope you make both, and I can follow you on masto if and when you make the leap

As awkward as it would be, given the number of great followers I have here, I'm thinking of joining the exodus and leaving for Blue Skies. Thoughts? Could we organise a mass departure of the Hisotry for Atheists community from here to there? I despise Elmo - so, time to go?
