When a Navy nuclear chief engineer qualified officer is in favor of this, then I'd give him a drug test.
People who have never operated a marine nuclear power plant have no idea how intensive the manhours are to keep it operating, or just the crew numbers to operate it.
The Navy's reactors are safe because we train until we're bleeding from every orifice, our procedures are solid and our people are rigorously trained on procedural compliance. Absent all that, a marine reactor is not safe. This is no civilian low-power-density core, these are fueled by bomb-grade uranium. There are a dozen accident scenarios that could cause widespread radioactive contamination.
In conclusion, this is a dumbassed idea.

Nuclear-powered shipping is so obviously the right solution, it pains me we didnโt go this direction decades ago: - 10,000x fuel-density: less space for fuel, more cargo, more revenue. - 5-10 yrs between refuels: less stops, longer or new routes, higher uptime. - 7,600 U.S. military naval reactor-years: nuclear at sea is already proven. - 440 civilian land reactors: no reason civilians can't do it at sea as well. - Already proven with NS Savannah. - No dirty exhaust. Can't wait to see what Nick and his team do to push this forward.

A lot of folks give @PeteHegseth grief for being a TV personality who has been on @FoxNews a lot, but in his job, it is a CRITICAL piece of background that makes him so successful. He has cultivated a look (just look at his suit, hair, facial expressions, etc - hell, even the tattoos) that convey confidence and competence over many years in adversarial discussions in front of a camera.
You can say what you want about this skill, but it is absolutely critical for leaders who are going to lead from in front of a camera - as the @secwar must do much more frequently than many others do - to convey that competence and capability in a hostile room (as any press conference is).
