As we watch the celebrity preacher construct is dying a public death, we should not flatter ourselves by thinking that we are just watching the overdue correction of arrogant men. The celebrity preacher was never the cause of evangelical sickness so much as one of its more marketable symptoms. He emerged from a church culture that had already made peace with pragmatism and had already replaced the ordinary ministry of Word. He gave us what we wanted. He gave us an authority without proximity, doctrine without accountability, leadership without ordinary pastoral burden, and a fake spirituality without the inconvenience of belonging to a people who actually know us. That is why his death will mean very little unless we also repent of the appetites that created him.
