The most dangerous work should be done at FFRDCs and or military laboratories. Not at your local universities. However, most of the cutting edge synthetic bio work is being done at universities and in the private sector. I am open to suggestions. The cat is out of the bag. There is no good solution and a ban handicaps the United States and prevents us from dominating the R&D. Keep in mind, there are numerous technical and economic challenges from this work being done.

You’re not wrong. Also, the reason for having counter measures and bioweapons R&D exists for a reason. I stated and made this argument for the past six years: we need a new IBWC. The new argument: GoF is rapidly becoming obsolete. Banning GoF is equivalent to banning chemistry because it could be used in bullets, or numerous other dual use R&D examples. There is no predicting the future use of a new technology. A federal ban on federal funding of GoF merely privatizes it. That creates a completely different philosophical problem.

Mind-blowing absurdity. Trump just signed an order handing the swamp full authority to greenlight any gain-of-function research they want. After everything COVID did to this country. Straight-up doublespeak—a slap in the face to every American who lived through it. The same people who lied, covered up, and got us into this mess now get the keys again. Unbelievable.

The AI Singularity The argument goes like this: 1. Humans build an AGI. 2. The AGI becomes good at AI research. 3. It designs a smarter AI. 4. That smarter AI designs an even smarter AI. 5. The cycle repeats faster and faster. Looking at the results and capabilities from the various labs over the past few weeks I would say we are firmly in this loop now. The next 18months will be wild. Recursive self improvement will dramatically increase capability very quickly from here. Marginal costs of all models will go to ~$0.

Just a reminder: the problem is much bigger than Dr. Fauci. He has been part of the system for decades. This video is 2001. During this congressional hearing, members of Congress discussed expanding the authority of the NIH and the Department of Health to regulate laboratories and coordinate with local hospitals in response to the anthrax attacks. Nearly a decade later, the FBI concluded that the anthrax attacks were carried out by U.S. Army microbiologist Bruce Ivins. From an originalist perspective, this is an example of Congress using a national crisis to justify expanding federal authority into areas that had traditionally been handled at the state and local level. To me, that’s one of the biggest problems with our government. Fear often becomes the justification for expanding federal power, and once those powers are granted, they’re rarely given back. It is my hope that someday, Americans understand that all of our problems stem from a government that ignores the limitations clearly outlined in the document they swore an oath to protect and defend.

@AGHuff @mcuban A rural hospital, level III, doesn’t “handle” a heart attack.. They stabilize and immediately transport to closest, large (level one) hospital for intervention. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

I’m looking at the cost of hip implants. The actual implant and accessories. I’m trying to compare the price the UK vs Canada vs prices here in the USA, which I know varies by hospital. Smaller hospitals pay more. I’m guessing Medicare allocates about $24b for the actual implant in its coding. I’m trying to figure out what we could save taxpayers if we negotiated a single price for all hospitals. We hear that hospitals can’t afford Medicare/caid pricing. This could be a place to allow small/rural hospitals to “catch up” on margin. Just as importantly, it would make far more sense if we could save money on implants (knees, etc too) , more money would be available to doctors Anyone have info they can share ? What am I missing ?
