I never understood the purpose of this doctrine. Obviously Mary was a virgin when she had Jesus, but why must she remain perpetually so? Especially when the Bible talks about Jesus’s brothers. She was married to Joseph and sex within marriage is good, not sinful.

The Virgin birth was a fulfillment of prophesy. “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14 That was written 700 years before the birth of Jesus. It was a miraculous sign, and God’s way of saying “This is my Son.” And because Adam sinned (not Eve) the sin nature is passed down through the man. Jesus had no sin nature, which was integral to him being our Savior. He was perfect. “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man [Adam], and death through sin … the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.” Romans 5:12 & 15

@JennMGreenberg I don't know where that comes from either, because the Bible talks about Mary having children. She was only a virgin when she birthed Jesus. After that, her and Joseph had children together.
