The S&P 500 dividend yield just hit an all-time low of 1.08%, going back to the 1800s. The prior low was 1.1% in 2000. There are now "dividend" mutual funds with negative yields (their expense ratios are higher than their dividend yields). Stock buybacks have exceeded dividends since the late 1990s. And yet, nearly all stock funds still focus solely on dividends, which is crazy. (And it's not just about the buybacks, but also the share issuance!) Buffett's been talking about this more than anyone for decades... We wrote a book on the topic 13 years ago, and the 2nd edition is free online. As you tune into the Berkshire meeting, and gasp at the $400 billion in cash on their balance sheet, understand why they consistently choose buybacks over dividends... mebfaber.com/books/ Chart: Multpl

My other favorite example was the Australian civil service’s experiment with sex-blind promotions, which ended up promoting fewer women because they had been receiving a slight, likely inadvertent, leg up before.
Wilfred Reilly@wil_da_beast630

This is one of the all-time funniest stories. As it turns out, true-blind selection makes most fields - from music to nursing - LESS diverse in gender and sometimes race terms. So, we don't do it anymore.

@hogsbreathvip82 Hard one to solve given the efficiency of modern agriculture and food's wide consumption, though: less than 1% of the pop. are harvest workers and want higher wages, the other 99% want cheaper food.

Heard an ABC interview recently with a dairy farmer who complained that because of “challenging economic conditions” had to rely on imported filipinos but also dairy farming was a “great way to build wealth”. Large farmers always fought for more migration to keep wages down.

One Nation is hostile to immigration. Tell that to the people of Griffith and Leeton who rely on immigrants. They celebrate each other’s special days together. Multiculturalism at its best.

WTI crude 72% y-o-y vs XLE (energy equities) 47% y-o-y. * Rising ratio = oil outperforming energy stocks * Falling ratio = energy stocks outperforming oil The WTI/XLE ratio turning up is the signal. It suggests a shift from energy as mature, low growth, cash-returning industry to a scarce resource in tightening, commodity constrained system. This setup tends to coincide with: * Tight real economy * Industrial demand > expectations * Inflation persistence 👉 Which supports our broader thesis: * Cyclicals > defensives * Small/mid > mega-cap growth * Cash flow businesses > duration assets

A lot of British politics, across the spectrum, can be classified as “Reactionary for the Very Recent Past”, ie wanting to revive the political climate of one of: • June 2020 • July 2012 • June 2007

@lowlandsapien I was surprised this story didn't get more traction last year: ethnic patrols now operate in Sydney because of crime concerns. https:// abc.net.au/news/2025-05-2 8/chinese-australians-demand-tougher-youth-crime-laws/105342534

Tens of thousands of reflective objects in geosynchronous and supersynchronous orbits showing up in astronomical survey data acquired years before Sputnik was launched, which make themselves scarce during geomagnetic storms, and show a particular affinity for nuclear tests.
BD@BrianDoher37387

We trained an ML classifier on 107,875 transients from 1949-1957 Palomar plates to filter out plate defects. Turns out the real ones avoid Earth’s shadow/clusters around nuclear tests. Either something reflective was in Earth orbit a decade before Sputnik, or dust on a glass plate has really strong opinions about nuclear weapons. arxiv.org/abs/2604.18799 @DrBeaVillarroel @esaagar @AlchemyAmerican @joerogan #VASCO #science #astro

I’m at a point in my faith life where platitudes, even from homilies, feel completely empty. I seek something real but have yet to find it in personal prayer or the Sacraments. This isn’t a cry for help or a drama post. I’m never converting to another religion, so don’t bother in the replies. I’m fine. The reason I’m posting this is because I literally have no other avenues to ask for advice on this on this conundrum.

Loophole used by Israel to void a religious prohibition on agriculture on Jewish land for 1 year out of every 7. Israeli minister sells all land to a goy for a trivial sum. Non-Zionist Rabbis object such sales are a sin, the response this doesn't apply to ficticious transactions.
