Memories of Mangoes One early summer’s day, in the South Delhi home where I lived as a child, a sudden sky-black storm shook the solitary mango tree in our garden, showering a bounty of green mangoes onto the grass below. I, head bowed to shield my face from the big, fat drops of quickening rain, sprinted across, from the sheltered veranda, to gather up the fallen fruit. At the door, impatiently, my elder sister oversaw my adventure, already planning what to do with the unexpected prize. Mango picking was forbidden in our home till they ripened; a futile rule defeated by the birds that were aplenty in the cities, back then in the 1980s. My sister stole the peeler and grater from the kitchen, as my middle sister and I washed the mangoes in near silence, for even the faintest betraying clatter in the kitchen would summon our mother’s vigilant tread, who would confiscate the unripe fruit and preserve them for a mango chutney. In a well-practised heist – we had done such things before – the salt and sugar jars, the bottle of mustard oil, and a couple of green chillies were quietly taken to the large bedroom we shared. The green mangoes were peeled and then their white and woody flesh grated, sprinkled with salt and sugar, the chillies broken and crushed, and finally, a generous splash of sharp mustard oil added to the mix, to make an impromptu mango relish, that could only be properly enjoyed when licked off one’s fingers. Relived it today, but with a dash of kashundi. Haapush Hupush shobdo; Charidik nistobdho.

#BREAKING Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issues clarification on statement on youth, says a section of media misquoted him. “I am pained to read how a section of the media has misquoted my oral observations made during the hearing of a frivolous case yesterday. What I had specifically criticised were those who have entered professions like the Bar (legal profession) with the aid of fake and bogus degrees. Similar persons have sneaked into the media, social media, and other noble professions as well, and hence, they are like parasites. It is totally baseless to suggest that I criticised the youth of our nation. Not only am I proud of our present and future human resource, but every youth of India inspires me. It is not an exaggeration to say that Indian youth have great regard and respect for me, and I too see them as the pillars of a developed India” - CJI says.

Did you know that if you put 100 black ants and 100 red ants together in a jar, they usually coexist peacefully? But if you shake the jar hard, they immediately turn on each other and start killing one another. The red ants see the black ants as enemies, and the black ants see the red ants as enemies. Yet the real enemy is the one shaking the jar. The same thing happens in human society. Before we turn on each other, we should stop and ask ourselves: who is shaking the jar?

@bahardutt @DelhiTreesSOS Started leaving water for the birds last year. It is the joy of my life. I have kept a comfy chair at a safe distance, and can spend hours at a time just watching them come and go. Such a huge return for a small, small act of kindness.

I am proud of my alma mater;it's come a long way from being the Boys' Club it used to be in the 1980s. Not that there weren't any outspoken women around in that decade and thereafter, but boys dominated the discourse, unlike in @JNU_official_50 which welcomed me into its fold when I left @StStephensClg after completing my graduation. After all the college(SSC) has had an uncomfortable history when it comes to gender-after the initial years when there were a few women students studying in college,it became a all-boys' college in 1950 and turned co-educational only in 1975. Hence women were relegated to the background. I remember envying my friends in @mirandahouse_ for instance, coz they were far more outspoken than I was. I missed having that opportunity. In JNU everyone had a voice. Everyone, regardless of their background or gender. Hence this shift (having a lady principal) truly gladdens my heart. Stephen's has always been a great educational institution and I hope it continues to lead ❤️ StStephen's college rules ✌️

#WATCH | Delhi: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, says, "... If you look at the fiscal situation, if you look at the fact that my oil companies are losing Rs 1,000 crores every day, the under recovery is going to be Rs 1,98,000 crores. The losses are Rs 1 lakh crore, if you look at the quarter. In that context, how long can you keep it like this? Where is the oil? It used to be around $64 or $65. It has gone up to $115 in that basket..."

@SketchesbyBoze I really wish there was some way to turn OFF AI. It is constantly interrupting my work and my thoughts, I'm at my wits end. This looks like a long document, shall I summarise it? Do you want help writing this? Can I suggest a better word? 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

This sort of thing really angers me. I’m trying to answer emails and spellcheck is changing words into different words, Gmail wants to “polish” my thoughtfully written draft and even suggests an automated three-paragraph response I didn’t write. They are trying to take all the personality, all the joy and spark, out of my writing. Writing IS thinking and they don’t want anyone ever to think again.

Dear Modiji You lectured us yesterday to save fuel, carpool and embrace austerity. But here’s how your lecture worked in reality incase you are not aware. Mumbai–Vadodara Indigo flight 6E 618 was scheduled to land in Vadodara at around 9 pm. The flight has now been diverted to Ahmedabad because Vadodara airport has been shut for commercial operations till your (PM Modi’s) special aircraft takes off for Delhi. After burning extra fuel to divert, the aircraft hovered over Ahmedabad for several minutes awaiting landing clearance — wasting even more fuel. Passengers suffered delays and inconvenience, all for one VIP movement. Yours. Sir, you claim that you don't believe in VIP culture. Right now, entire Vadodara airport stands disrupted, commercial flights affected, aviation fuel burnt unnecessarily — but we are told to tighten belts and save petrol. Austerity for citizens. Privilege for PM? Tomorrow another lecture on fuel efficiency? Spare us, Sir. #NarendraModi #Indigo #Fuel #Vadodara @narendramodi @RamMNK @IndiGo6E @virsanghvi @srinivasiyc @rohinisingh @tvkvijayhq @ravish_journo

Very admirable. Hope the case files also came by bicycle, not in official car. It would be great if a cycling culture could be encouraged in Delhi also, with the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court judges, instead of their BMWs and Toyota Camrys respectively.

MP High Court judge Justice Dwarkadheesh Bansal reaches court on a bicycle after the PM’s appeal to save fuel. Trying hard to get a Rajya Sabha seat or may be next CJI? 🤣🤣

The first one is a digitally altered page being wrongly presented as the front page of The Hindu on June 6, 1967. The second is the actual page released that day. This is what social media is capable of; it can even alter the front page of India's national English daily.
