A reminder of what wind power actually looks like... We have 32 GW installed, hence the size of the scale on the y-axis Over the weekend output fell to 0.6 GW - this happened overnight when demand was low but when solar output was zero - so functionally we had no wind or solar on the grid The length of the lull when wind was below 3.2 GW (a tenth of the installed amount) was far longer than any battery can bridge) THIS is why wind and solar do not provide energy security. In the winter periods of zero solar are longer and coincide with times of peak demand, not just for the day but for the year

@Unplugnukes @KathrynPorter26 The Edwards & Sanborn Solar and Energy Storage project in California is among the largest in the world. It has a capacity of approximately 3.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh), capable of powering roughly 110,000 homes for a day. Who loses out and what happens on day 2?

@renewablesmiffy @GrumpyPete But did they have to do it by charging it all to the consumer? Other nations fund green energy with taxes, but the UK passes these costs to consumers (up till now). To rub salt in the wound we have the ridiculous linkage to the price of gas

Renewables pushed wholesale prices to very low and even negative prices during the week. The bulk of solar and wind CfD is charging £60-90/MWh. Gas is operating at £70-110/MWh I can see why he’s now turning off replies!
Richard Tice MP 🇬🇧@TiceRichard

You tell us renewables are cheaper….so why was this not cheaper than weekly or yearly average ? Because it’s a con, all the levies and CFDs and back up costs mean even at zero gas cost, we are still paying very high prices You conveniently forgot to mention that we had to import 20% electricity….so hugely exposed to overseas goodwill

@GrumpyPete @renewablesmiffy Partly, but also because of the Marginal Pricing System: Even if 90% of electricity comes from cheap renewables, if the final 10% needed to meet demand comes from a gas power plant, that gas plant sets the price for all the electricity used in that period.

@DarrylMcGarvey @100kDiary Agreed it doesn’t matter in the end but lease repayments are based on the depreciation only of the vehicle so the repayments will be less than a PCP which will include interest

I think it's an odd thing to do to refer to people as financially illiterate while confusing a lease with a PCP. The joy of a lease is it's typically fully managed, maintenance etc, and depreciation doesn't matter as it's someone else's issue. A PCP does, of course, have a depreciation element, hence the guaranteed MFV.

Unpopular opinion: Leasing a brand new car is the most financially illiterate thing normalised in the UK. You're paying £500/month for something that loses 40% of its value by the time you hand it back. Then you sign up for another one. A £5,000 used car does the exact same job. Gets you from A to B. Doesn't care about your ego. The difference over 10 years? Roughly £60k. Your car isn't a flex. It's a monthly donation to a dealership. Agree or disagree? 👇

@Ste1010208 @husseinhhakim @100kDiary True but by not owning a leased car this means you don’t have to worry about the hassle of selling it on, or how much it has depreciated in the time you’ve been driving it.

@MarieBell626390 @TorstenBell @TiceRichard @Gabriel_Pogrund Tax avoidance, whilst still complying with tax legislation, is legal. For example, introducing your spouse into a business partnership to reduce tax. However, deliberately failing to pay tax which is legally due is not acceptable tax avoidance

@leegee010 @TorstenBell @TiceRichard @Gabriel_Pogrund Only it wasn’t legal. It’s a bit like a tradesman sending in his tax return showing £50k profit but “forgetting” to pay the tax. HMRC would be all over that in a jiffy but complex tax structures like this are less obvious

I guess we’ll have to take Kim’s word for it, though I’m still skeptical EVERY PLAYER would get the same access as Rory McIlroy Here’s the problem though: • Without reform, some players will get more practice & familiarity. I’d argue there should be a set number the month leading up to the tournament, regardless of whether they’re a champion or not • This encourages more players to skip tournaments prior to The Masters, creating a load management-type issue in golf that’ll devalue those tournaments to broadcast partners, patrons, & sponsors. Picking up what I’m putting down?

If I wanted to match the number of the rounds at Augusta that Rory got, I easily could have done that

A lot of the conversation around Rory McIlroy's "unfair advantage", especially from golf media, is completely missing the point... There's no reason there shouldn't be a cap on the amount of times golfers can play Augusta the month prior to The Masters, whether they're past champs or not. This ensures there isn't a blatant competitive disparity. Yes, golfers that qualify for the tournament can access the course the month prior, but everyone can't skip three straight tournaments* & fly private whenever they want to Augusta. *Again, this encourages top golfers to skip tournaments, devaluing those tournaments for broadcast partners, patrons, & sponsors. For example, if the cap is 3-4 practice rounds at Augusta the month prior to the tournament, consider them like timeouts. Use them or lose them. Problem solved. Debate over. Past champions still get their well-deserved perks, but they don't get a blatant unfair advantage.
