All AI policy is local. All AI policy is national. All AI policy is international. All policy is AI policy* Regardless of whether you subscribe to some or all of these positions, the upshot is that AI is the Super Bowl of public policy - as I told @ceciliakang (@nytimes). The key is realizing that the stakes are even higher than the Lombardi Trophy and that we ultimately have to find a way for all of us to win. My own two cents -- each actor has a role to play in helping AI "go well." States can and should dictate how their doctors, educators, and law enforcement leverage AI, for instance. State and local governments can and should use procurement mechanisms to encourage AI innovation in certain domains. National actors must shape AI policies that implicate national and economic security. And we all must be swimming in the same general direction of an AI-ready America. That's easy to tweet and harder to realize in practice. But that's exactly why this is the Super Bowl -- we've got to use all the tools at our disposal to have a nuanced, evidence-driven, and creative approach to getting this right. That's also why this moment demands an interdisciplinary and humble approach to regulation. Our first answers are unlikely to be the best ones or even durable. In particular, we need far more engagement between technical folks and traditional policy thinkers. Finding the constitutionally proper points of intervention for each of the aforementioned actors should not be determined by hunches and vibes but rather a strong understanding of how models work today and how they will develop in the future. *h/t @austincarson

We are obviously making god-tier technology in so many areas the and the answer cannot be “oh yeah, I guess the government is actually just god.” This clearly doesn’t work. Please argue to me with a straight face that the founding fathers intended this.

When we first started @Techweek_, it was right after COVID, and we saw so many founders relocating outside the Bay Area to cities all over the US. That first year, SF Tech Week was actually the smallest. This year, it’s set to be the largest. We’ve doubled the number of SF events at launch year over year, a clear signal showing just how much the AI wave is fueling the city’s growth. And this is shaping up to be *the* week for tech in the city. LA was home to the very first Tech Week, and it’s special for me to see how much it’s grown.
