@mathscpdchat We’re doing a full suite of 3 papers in very early mocks over this and next week. A second set of mocks will be in Feb/Mar. Not sure yet when the deadline is - I have two classes so it’s going to be fun. Worth it though as you do get a true idea of where they are right now.

@RogersHistory Think about your relationships and how to build them with students and staff BUT remember that you don’t need the students to like you - you’re not their friend so don’t be pressured into changing any seating plans.

What would your #1 tip be to a teacher starting in a new school this September?

Maths hive mind - I need you! I’m thinking of a completion worksheet where you solve quadratics, sketch them, find the y intercept etc Where is it?! #mathschat #mathscpdchat

@mathsjem @jemmaths @deriver69 Silvine do A4 square paper books with margins. We buy these now from YPO. they are more expensive though but it cuts out the stress of having margins drawn without a ruler 🤬

@deriver69 Hmm, not sure I care how wide the margins are! Say there are 4 million secondary school children in the uk and they each have maths 4 times a week for 39 weeks. If it takes 10 seconds to draw margins in a lesson, that’s over a million hours a year wasted on margin drawing!

Why do lined exercise books get margins but squared exercise books don’t?

@missradders We’re in the same boat. Juggling our own classes to ensure the affected classes get some maths teacher input. Lots of parental grumbles as well which I fully sympathise with but have no answers for them. Recruitment is dire as well so not looking forward to next year.

Heads of Maths: Anyone having any luck sourcing specialist Maths supply? Have staff out for medical reasons and it is absolutely crippling me planning so many lessons for non-specialists. How are others managing without ruining their own wellbeing/ breaking? Tips?

@Whitehughes @AJMagicMessage I do this - I just assume it’s because my fingers are used to typing - tion at the end of words. Very infuriating though!

I'm writing some teacher guides for a publisher at the moment, and I've noticed that I keep typing 'horixontally' instead of 'horizontally'. Is it just me, or does anyone else have a word that they know how to spell, but for some reason regularly mistype?

New textbook arrived today! I’m teaching matrices (transformations) in Further Maths for the first time and I can’t find enough examples and interesting questions for my lessons. So I figured another source of questions might help. 👍

My FM students were mixing up the spelling of sheath and sheaf in our matrices lesson yesterday so we looked it up. ‘If you take your knife out of its sheath you can use it to cut a sheaf of wheat…’ So there you go. Weird stuff you learn when teaching matrices for the first time

@Mr_SmithEd I don’t know of any research but we have moved away from them. Higher students should be able to cope without them and foundation students need the practice at rearranging.

I had a conversation with a teacher about formula triangles yesterday. Is there any research either way on their use? I certainly have an opinion but interested if it’s backed up at all.

@CasioMaths The new one has such an inferior finish/look and why have you put the SD button in a menu? I would like to stick to the old one or may even contemplate a different brand.

The burning question, should students upgrade to the new ClassWiz or stick with a tried and tested model? hubs.ly/Q01ZzQYN0
