This time, the Commons will in effect be acting as a unicameral legislature. There'll be no guarantees that the Bill will be fixed by the Lords, or that it won't pass without further scrutiny. If wavering MPs vote this through again, a dangerous and flawed Bill will become law.

@fugitiveink I think that specific research is always likely to be more interesting than broad sweep research which may be based as much on the researcher's opinions and prejudices as on what is actually being researched. I'm sure your work is hugely valuable. Please have confidence in it!

I am trying not to mind that someone dear to me always laughingly dismisses my attempts at historical research as "niche" and "very specific", as if this somehow rendered them automatically ridiculous and without merit — but it's not really working. Onward and upward, eh?

Heads of state and popes ought to a large extent to disappear into their roles, minimizing the degree to which their individual personalities color perception of their actions. This reinforces in the minds of both the office holder and the public that the authority of the office is held in trust, and exists for the common good rather than the good of the individual office holder and whatever partisan interest he also happens to represent. One reason King Charles has been so attractive a figure to many is precisely that his being “King” is more obvious than his being “Charles.” His bearing and his words have the tendency to bring to the forefront the office and its responsibilities and unifying character, more than his individual personality. Benedict XVI had a similar bearing and rhetorical approach as pope. By contrast, Trump and the late Pope Francis have been such polarizing figures in part because their individual personalities, including their departures from the usual expectations of those who hold their offices, have utterly dominated the way they exercised their authority.

@DovForman This is so terrible, @DovForman. I stand with the Jewish community in Golders Green, where I lived for some years as a young adult, and throughout the country.

Two people have been stabbed in Golders Green - the heart of London’s Jewish community - at the bottom of my road. The Government needs to get to the root cause of this problem. There can be no stone left turned. The silent majority needs to speak out now. Before it really is too late. Although I fear it already is.
