Given the escalating reputational attacks over the past few days, a few things: (1) I will respond only in a limited way that does not distract from my mission and, where I can, I will use these attacks to advance IFF’s work strategically. This means building stronger roots within IFF’s community, supporting those who may be incidentally targeted, and, most importantly, focussing on the pace and quality of our work. My core value is public service to the people of India, and I feel great joy in devoting my life’s energy to it, as a lawyer and through my social work. (2) While I have every right and the resources and means to pursue legal remedies, many people know that I do two jobs and have a full personal and professional life. I would rather spend that time playing with my cats, reading a book or going for a run than prosecuting a troll. Those who know me and my work, at IFF and beyond, will not be swayed by disinformation campaigns that are being made in bad faith in order to put me and IFF at a perception of risk. (3) IFF has practised radical transparency in its finances and will continue to do so. Even when not required by regulation we make proactive disclosures which are detailed and provide a deep insight of how much money we get, who funds us and where it is spent. It is this data which is being used to attack me and IFF. Our books are audited and clean, and each month hundreds of Indians from all walks of life donate to us. Risk assessment is built into all our financial reporting and compliance processes. We intentionally keep a small budget and team so that IFF survives even in the absence of institutional funding, and we have not received any grants this financial year. If you can, please do consider donating to IFF. (4) The same transparency extends to the nature of our work, which is undertaken under a three-year strategic plan that has been put through public consultation. It is wholly directed at advancing the objectives of the Constitution of India as technology becomes ever more deeply embedded in our lives and in structures of power and profit. We will fight the violation of fundamental rights by the state or technology companies without compromising our principles, bound only by the constraints on our capacity. Our work on platform accountability or even state governments ruled by opposition parties is in the public domain. (5) My personal political orientation is progressive, secular and left of centre. I am imperfect on all these counts. For years I have described myself as a social democrat, and this has been a continuing process of learning for me. I have family, friends, collaborators, supporters and clients across the political spectrum, and I cherish the diversity they bring to my life. I deeply believe that every Indian is entitled to the full measure of their constitutional rights, irrespective of their political orientation and this adds to the richness of our society that manifests in food, language, culture and values that are developed over time. As an Indian, a constitutionalist and a practising Hindu (which is my private system of ritual, belief and connection to my family customs), I will continue to fight the coercive forces of digital authoritarianism. This is my first and last response on this matter. From here on, my only response will be to resume sharing my public writing and IFF’s work on X. Have a great day folks and don’t forget to drink enough water!

A few communication lessons for the Government, BJP and everyone in public life: 1. India’s biggest communication problem is TV news and MSM. At least, that’s how a large section of people now sees it. They believe it has destroyed trust and poisoned public conversation. You may not realise it now, but India’s biggest enemy is Indian TV news. It has now become your enemy too. The more you use it, the more damage it is likely to cause. After graduating from the @IIMC_India , my first job was at @IndiaToday because, like every journalism student then, I wanted to become like the great journalists I saw there. Today, if a child wants to become a journalist, can any parent or teacher name three TV journalists as role models? Why not? An aspiring cricketer has Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli or Yashasvi Jaiswal. Who does an aspiring TV journalist have? In fact, many young people are told, “become anything, but don’t become a TV journalist”. 2. If you don’t want another protest that you neither understand nor know how to handle, rethink TV news. Right now, it’s working against you, not for you. Why should hardworking salaried reporters get all the hate for decisions taken by editors and owners? Next time there’s a protest, ask the owners to stand in front. That alone could transform the TV news business model. Seriously, why are the owners in hiding? Shouldn’t they also be accountable for damaging India’s socio-political fabric? 3. Don’t make the mistake of believing this happened because of Instagram. And don’t make the bigger mistake of thinking Instagram can be fixed to defeat the Gen Z narrative. It will backfire. No matter what you do, you can’t manufacture authenticity. 4. Everyone even remotely in power should switch to silent mode for a while. Ask the shouting spokespersons and television regulars to disappear for a while. On the environment, send environmental experts. On the economy, send economists. On education, send educationists. On healthcare, send doctors and public health experts. Stop relying on political performers who turn every debate, whether it’s about pollution, jobs, education or healthcare, into communal or factional politics. Replace them with genuine subject experts. 5. We don’t want India to become Western. But we must make India modern. Stop celebrating regressive ideas. Talk more about science, philosophy, art, poetry, creativity, innovation and the dignity of every citizen. 6. Fix our crumbling cities. Clean our air. 7. Listen more. Let your work speak. I hope this moment becomes an opportunity to rethink how we communicate with a new generation. Looking forward to a developed, happy and innovative India.

Delhi Traffic Police late on Saturday issued an advisory saying e-commerce platforms should “regulate operations” in the restricted area of Delhi protests. India’s biggest instant groceries app Blinkit on Saturday showed it was “unavailable” for deliveries in the area.

@jaganm And oddly no one who has been wined and dined by them to my knowledge has put a clear call out that they were wined and dined and if it had any bearing on their views. Says a lot about these media content creators.

I was wondering about this test drive of Nissan Tekton given the noise everyone who participated is making on social media. I assume that Nissan has flown and wined and dined everyone who participated. It could easily be a budget of a couple of crores. How many Tekton's will they need to sell to recover that amount? Given the Duster which has a strong brand and on which the car is based has flopped, will they even recover the marketing cost of this event?

@shilpaanand If lack of hygiene is the only motive, cancel all licenses. Show me a restaurant in Mumbai, one restaurant that is so clean. Else there is something more fishy here that smells off. @blitzkreigm is right.

Let's not normalise lack of hygiene. This is how we end up with uncleared garbage on the streets. Perfectly ok to stop the momo wala and the dairy wala to stop serving customers till they clean up. That said, next focus should be on clean supply chains from farm to fork.
Mangalam Maloo@blitzkreigm

It’s possible that there may have been violations! But one can’t also rule out the possibility of targeted attacks on specific places by vested interests for purposes of land/location etc.

Its 1.45 am and i cant sleep bec of severe acidity. I have ulcers. And the last time my ulcers threatened to burst i had to be hospitalized & guess what @icicilombard refused to cover my hospitization cost - bec i hadnt declared my ulcers at the time of taking the policy. But i didnt have ulcers at the time of taking the policy and now they are asking for doctors certificates to confirm i didnt have ulcers at the time of taking the policy. Next they will insist on the car number that kills u in advance so ur family can make a claim. Shame on this @ICICILombard . Am so disgusted. I no longer care abt the refund - i will expose the fraud in their operations
