Today's wind tunnels and other tools are vastly better at reducing drag and increasing stability. The older car from 1963 has a drag coefficient of 0.33 and the newer car 0.25.
Older cars have spiffy looks but horrible drag. Newer cars have dramatically less drag, and more importantly, increased stability. This constrains their looks.
If you look past minor cosmetic details you'd be surprised at how similar modern cars look. There's an entire science devoted to just dealing with the drag, noise, and stability problems caused by the rear view mirrors on each side.

Manchmal frage ich mich halt schon– vielleicht auch mit ner gewissen Enttäuschung –, warum die ästhetischen Möglichkeiten der E-Mobilität nicht ausgeschöpft werden. Gerade weil ja elektrische Antriebe so viele technische Freiheiten eröffnen, könnte man das Automobil gestalterisch doch völlig neu und radikal denken aber stattdessen ist alles wieder super konventionell und super linkedIn (weiße Sneaker) und vielleicht spiegelt sich gerade darin auch diese omnipräsente Ambitionslosigkeit unserer Gegenwart wider.

@nico_hedged Geht mir ähnlich. Essen gehen mit meiner Tochter sind hier knapp 40€-60€, Kino kostet uns zwei auch um die 40€.
Für 50€ kaufe ich für die eine Woche ein und selbstgekocht schmeckt es besser als im Restaurant.
Waren letzten auf einem Dorffest, 80€ weg. Muss man wollen.

Ich merke bei mir selbst, dass Restaurantbesuche irgendwie komplett aus dem normalen Alltag gerutscht sind.
Nicht, weil ich Essen gehen grundsätzlich nicht mag.

Aber inzwischen überlegst du ja oft schon vorher:
„Lohnt sich das jetzt wirklich?“
Du denkst an Hauptgericht, Getränke, vielleicht Kinder, vielleicht noch Trinkgeld und am Ende bist du bei einer Summe, bei der du dir denkst:
„Puh.. dafür kann ich auch mehrere Tage vernünftig einkaufen.“ 🫠
Und genau deshalb gehe ich ehrlich gesagt seit Ewigkeiten kaum noch ins Restaurant. Wenn überhaupt, dann mal günstig bei den Tschechen oder irgendwo, wo es sich noch halbwegs normal anfühlt 🙈
Und das ist gar kein Vorwurf an die Gastronomie!
Die haben selbst höhere Kosten, Personalprobleme, Energie, Miete, Wareneinsatz und müssen irgendwie überleben 💯
Aber für viele normale Menschen ist Essen gehen dadurch einfach kein lockerer Alltagsmoment mehr, sondern eine bewusste kleine Luxusentscheidung.
Und das finde ich schon bemerkenswert.
Weil es zeigt, wie sehr sich Wohlstand manchmal still verschiebt.
Nicht dadurch, dass plötzlich alles zusammenbricht.
Sondern dadurch, dass man Dinge, die früher ab und zu selbstverständlich waren, irgendwann immer öfter streicht.
Restaurant?
Lieber nicht.
Kino?
Vielleicht nächsten Monat.
Ausflug?
Mal schauen, was noch übrig bleibt.
Und irgendwann besteht das Leben immer mehr aus „vernünftig sein“ und immer weniger aus „einfach mal machen“.
Vielleicht ist genau das dieser leise Wohlstandsverlust, über den viel zu wenig gesprochen wird.
Nicht, dass man jeden Tag essen gehen müsste!
Aber dass selbst ein normaler Restaurantbesuch für viele Menschen/Familien inzwischen wieder richtig überlegt werden muss.
Oder empfindet ihr das anders? 🤔

Es gibt Neubauwohnungen mit knapp 85qm in Hamburger Randlagen, die knapp 580k € kosten.
Also basically ne gehobene Pärchenwohnung ohne geplante Kinder. Bei aktuellen Bauzinsen von knapp 4% und 2% Zinsen rechnet man hier abzüglich illusorischer EK-Leistung von 115k€ von knapp 3000€ Kosten pro Monat - plus Nebenkosten.
Ich gehöre zu den oberen 15-10% der Nettoeinkommen. Ich kann mir das unmöglich jemals leisten.

Der härteste Kommentar zu meinem Bali-Post: „Dann hau doch ab." Bin ich. Vor sechs Jahren.
Was ich heute nach 50 Kommentaren gelernt habe:
Die Leute, die geantwortet haben, sie fanden Bali schrecklich, beschreiben fast immer Kuta, Seminyak oder Canggu im August.
Das ist, als würde man München bewerten, nachdem man drei Tage am Hauptbahnhof verbracht hat.
Die Leute, die geschrieben haben, ich würde Einheimische verdrängen, leben selbst in Berlin, München oder Hamburg in Vierteln, in denen heute niemand mehr Miete zahlen kann, der dort geboren wurde.
Und die Leute, die 30°C als „Folter" bezeichnen, haben in den letzten 12 Monaten vermutlich 14 Tage Sonne gesehen.
Ich verteidige Bali nicht. Bali braucht meine Verteidigung nicht.
Ich verteidige die Idee, dass du dein Leben auch anders führen kannst.
Bali ist nicht das Paradies. Es gibt Müll, Verkehr und Touristen-Hotspots, die man meiden muss.
Wer 14 Tage in Kuta war und das für „Bali" hält, hat Bali nicht gesehen.
Aber die eigentliche Frage ist nicht, ob Bali besser ist als Deutschland.
Die Frage ist, warum so viele Deutsche bei der bloßen Vorstellung von Alternativen aggressiv werden.
Wenn dein Leben dich glücklich macht, brauchst du doch meinen Post nicht zu hassen, oder?

Jeder, den ich kenne und der den Film "Forrest Gump" gesehen hat, hat über diese Szene gelacht, als Forrest meinte, er hab da "in was mit Obst investiert". Aber keiner von denen (inklusive mir) hat dann sofort Apple-Aktien gekauft. Der Film kam am 13.10.1994 in die Kinos und seitdem hat die Apple-Aktie um 111.800% zugelegt - plus Dividenden. I once had a girl who reached out to me first and we started talking.
Then I discovered she deliberately extended her reply time. She’ll text me “hi, how are you doing” I’ll reply in minutes (like a normal human being) “I’m fine, how are you doing” and she’ll take another hour to reply that.
I told her if we are going to have a conversation then she might need to reply within normal time. She apologized and agreed and tried for that day.
But then she continued right after, replying after 1 whole day. I too decided to reply after 2 whole days (let’s all be mad together). I basically doubled every reply time she gave, even if I was with my phone at the time and not busy at all.
Then at some point I asked myself “what am I doing? Why am I playing all these games and doing all these mental gymnastics at this age?”
I reminded myself that women are always with their phones and if she wasn’t replying on time maybe she wasn’t so interested after all. And if she was and still playing these games then she wasn’t healthy enough for me to have anything to do with her.
Also, me intentionally replying late also was me playing her games. Games I didn’t need to play.
Let’s say I beat her at her games and she now liked me is this what I will have to keep up with to keep her interested? Endless mind games? Abeg abeg, I’ll pass.
They tell you do not double text, do not compliment, do not call until after so so time, you won’t need to play all these games with a person who actually wants a healthy relationship with you. Abeg let her go. It’s tiring.

Das lokale Café zwei Straßen weiter hier in Prag macht besseren Flat White und kostet 3,20 € statt 4,80 €.
Echte, leckere belegte Brote, statt in Plastik verschweißten Convenience-Müll.
Der Besitzer kennt meinen Namen nach dem dritten Besuch. Und das Geld bleibt im Viertel, statt in einer Seattle-Bilanz zu landen.
Ich bin raus. Seit ich reise, nur noch lokalen Kaffee, egal ob Krakau, Prag oder Amsterdam.
Der Kaffee schmeckt überall besser als die immer gleiche verbrannte Standardplörre von der grünen Kette.
Bei Starbucks bist du Kundennummer 4.712 und ein Becher mit falsch geschriebenen Namen.
Beim lokalen Barista bin ich der Typ mit dem Flat White. Man quatscht, bekommt Tipps, taucht in die Stadt ein.
Mein Fazit: Geo-Arbitrage fängt nicht erst beim Steuer-Setup an. Sie fängt schon beim Frühstück an.
Also nochmal, warum zur Hölle machen Leute das?

The problem with Mein Kampf is not that it is embedded in the politics of another era, and it is not that I disagree (or agree) with its contents or arguments.
Most of the tedium arises from these properties:
1) A stilted, heavily nominalised verbal style that makes for slow reading.
2) Organisational tensions and redundancies arising from the choice to impose a semi-autobiographical scheme upon a political manifesto.

Reminds me of Feynman writing on how he learnt Portuguese. He know the “long” and “difficult” words as it was from Latin and English also uses those Latinate vocabulary for sophisticated terms. He writes :
When we got back on the plane, they pointed out another man who did speak Portuguese, so I sat next to him. He had been studying neurosurgery in Maryland, so it was very easy to talk with him - as long as it was about cirugia neural, o cerebreu, and other such “complicated” things. The long words are actually quite easy to translate into Portuguese because the only difference is their endings: “-tion” in English is “-ção” in Portuguese; “-ly” is “-mente,” and so on. But when he looked out the window and said something simple, I was lost: I couldn’t decipher “the sky is blue.”
I got off the plane in Recife (the Brazilian government was going to pay the part from Recife to Rio) and was met by the father-in-law of Cesar Lattes, who was the director of the Center for Physical Research in Rio, his wife, and another man. As the men were off getting my luggage, the lady started talking to me in Portuguese: “You speak Portuguese? How nice! How was it that you learned Portuguese?”
I replied slowly, with great effort. “First, I started to learn Spanish. . . then I discovered I was going to Brazil.
Now I wanted to say, “So, I learned Portuguese,” but I couldn’t think of the word for “so.” I knew how to make BIG words, though, so I finished the sentence like this: “CONSEQUENTEMENTE, apprendi Portugues! (Meaning : Consequently, I learnt Portuguese)
When the two men came back with the baggage, she said, “Oh, he speaks Portuguese! And with such wonderful words:CONSEQUENTEMENTE!”

Let me give all trying to learn Kannada, a life hack. When in doubt, find the equivalent pure Hindi word, and Kannadise it. Example: Instead of, "try maadi". Look for the closest Hindi word. Try = Prayatna. Then say, "Prayatnisi". Hey presto. You will be lauded for the purity of your Kannada. Has happened to me :-) Instead of saying "Naanu Responsibility Thagolthini" ( I take responsibility). Hindi word. Uttardaitva. Naanu Uttaradaitva thagolthini. Try it. Never fails!:-)

Here is a huge positive to modern life that gets no press.
I have an old 2009 Toyota, and the AUX port crapped out about a year ago. Went to YouTube. Young, enthusiastic guy explains how to fix it.
It is not obvious - involves taking the dashboard apart in a counter-intuitive way, but once you see it, it's a 15 minute fix.
There are actually dozens of videos showing how to do this, and they collectively have well over 200k views.
Had this happened in 1995, I would have just lived with it. But the combo of the replacement AUX jack available from Amazon and the video of the simple (but not obvious) fix, I fixed it.
I HAVE DONE THIS DOZENS OF TIMES. Replaced the control panel of my dishwasher. Replaced the ice maker in the fridge. Fixed a wonky sanding head on my drill press. Mastered a bandsaw technique that I use for my sculpture. On and on and on...
I think it is likely no exaggeration to say billions of fixes and skill upgrades have been performed worldwide that would not have been performed if it were not for the instruction freely given peer-to-peer on YouTube.
Take a moment to be happy about this. The busted item keeps performing, rather than going to the landfill. The person learning and doing the fix gains a sense of mastery and saves money. It's an unmixed blessing.
Stop doomscrolling. Think of what is busted in your house, find the YouTube video on how to fix it, and fix it.

Merz hat heute die historische Chance, aus Scholz’ Desaster 2024 zu lernen und es diesmal richtig zu machen.
Statt in der blockierten Koalition weiter festzustecken, sollte er offen und ehrlich sagen: Die Geduld ist am Ende. Wir müssen mit den aktuellen Partnern einen Teil des Weges getrennt gehen. Die Blockade muss im Interesse Deutschlands gelöst werden.
Gleichzeitig Ministerien radikal verschlanken, ideologische und luxuriöse Wasserköpfe abbauen (auch eigene) und seriöse, überparteilich respektierte Köpfe einbinden: Boris Pistorius von der SPD halten und Daniel Bayaz von den Grünen als Finanzminister in Verantwortung nehmen. Das Signal ist klar: Es geht nicht um Lager, sondern um Kompetenz für das Land.
Sofort danach ein kompaktes Reformpaket mit spürbaren Sofortmaßnahmen aus der Schublade ziehen und die Vertrauensfrage stellen. Genau damit schafft Merz frische demokratische Legitimation für eine Minderheitsregierung und nimmt der AfD jede Deutungshoheit über den Prozess. Der Kanzler dominiert die öffentliche Kommutation durch Führung und mutige Risikobereitschaft.
Die enge Taktung schafft echte Transparenz. Die Wähler sehen live, was ohne Dauerblockade plötzlich möglich wäre. SPD und Grüne haben keine Zeit für Gegen-rechts-Kampagnen und müssen sich an Taten messen lassen.
Das ist keine Machtspielerei. Das ist verantwortungsvolle Politik mit offenen Karten, die einzige Art, wie eine echte Wende in diesem Land noch demokratisch durchsetzbar wird. Denn mit dieser SPD in einer Koalition geht es nicht.
