Because we think about how our parents bemoaned the loss of the good old days of the 50s and how our grandparents bemoaned the loss of the good old days of the 20s and we realize this is the same old song with slightly modified lyrics.

@IlyaSomin @David_J_Bier Is deportation a "punishment"? If it is a serious crime, I see it as a far lesser consequence than prison time.

I almost never differ with you. Except this one time. Punishing one person more than another for the same crime merely because one is a non-citizen immigrant is unjust. It’s increasing punishment based on arbitrary circumstances of birth. See my discussion here: reason.com/volokh/2018/05…

Deportation is the appropriate punishment for actual criminal noncitizens because they chose to come and victimize someone here. They shouldn’t get to choose to continue to live alongside their victims anymore.
Nick Minock@NickMinock

“If two people commit the same crime, but only one’s punishment includes deportation, that’s a perversion of justice and not a reflection of the values of Fairfax County.” - Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano’s website

@hubermanlab All this extra detail while still not also acknowledging she’s been vegan 40 years (considering all the BS out there about how veganism will eventually destroy you etc), is kinda weird.

@Strangeland_Elf I don't know who that guy is but I agree. I detest photos of people pointing to something. If it's important it can be noticed.

@OrinKerr My objection (and maybe those of others) might be answered if defendant had challenged the reliability of the system. The government’s imperfect information standing on its own should not be enough. If result probably indicated insurance issue, then ok.

Officer spots car, enters license plate #, state registry reports that it cannot confirm car has valid insurance. CA8: This created reasonable suspicion to stop car, at least given that defendant didn't challenge reliability of the state registry. ecf.ca8.uscourts.gov/opndir/26/03/2… #N

@blueacre @neontaster Her post-mortem on The Hobbit movies is still one of the best videos to cover the failures of those movies. Its one flaw is the relatively brief insertion of identity politics really late into that video essay. But it's easily overlooked thankfully.

@Gormogons The divide over the Superman movies does not follow a normal pattern, it's fascinating.

A German tourist in NYC tried some green salsa from a taco shop. The salsa was too spicy for him. So he sued. He alleges that he is extra sensitive to spicy foods, and he got diarrhea and mouth sores that lasted for days. Court says it's not on the business "to ascertain consumers' individual needs and guarantee that each consumer has all relevant information specific to its situation." He could have just asked how spicy their salsa was, but he didn't, and so he did not act reasonably.

I know y’all are out to mansplain this to me, but I have an ND kid with a special interest in the NASA space program and I assure you, I am explained to more than enough and so is every adult in his orbit, including an astrophysics grad student in Grand Rapids who got the number of Saturn’s moons woefully wrong
Emily Zanotti 🦝@emzanotti

To be fair, they’re not going to the moon…yet. Wednesday, they will launch for a lunar flyby, similar to the route (accidentally) taken by Apollo 13. This is in *preparation* for a moon landing, sometime in the next two years!

My high school neighbourhood just elected a local 59yo councilwoman who campaigned in the local paper with an AI photo. Her statement: ‘I used an internet program to enhance the image because the resolution of the photo was bad. It’s simply my photo, that really is me. I use medication that’s why I look a bit different now. But yes, I do look much younger than my age. When I’m out with my son people think I’m his girlfriend. I hear that I look super young for my age all the time.’

See, the way “ethics” works is that no one, not your parent, not your boss, sure as hell not The Verge can proclaim for you what may or may not be ethical…to you. Take in the information you can, make your own decisions. Or in the alternative, declare “There is no ethical consumption of any content claiming itself an arbiter of all ethics.”
The Verge@verge

There is no ethical consumption of HBO’s Harry Potter series theverge.com/report/901818/…

This is so incredibly funny. Trump can’t bully libs into giving him a Nobel, but evangelicals are glad to toss out their entire theology to guarantee him a place in heaven.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Trump just posted a letter from Franklin Graham assuring him that says "you commented to the media that you might not be heaven bound. Maybe you responded in jest, but it is an important issue to know for certain that your soul is secure and will spend eternity in the presence of God."

People who say that Bombadil serves no purpose or “brings the story to a halt” misunderstand the purpose of Tolkien’s writing.
