It’s been 100 years since the Easter Lily was introduced by Cumman na mBan to raise funds for the dependents of Republican prisoners. The Easter Lily remembers all those patriots who gave their lives in Irelands freedom struggle. Wear it with pride.

It is outrageous the way this @thejournal_ie “fact-check” has allowed the misleading nature of @HollyCairnsTD to slide! The context in which the leader of the @SocDems raised the approximately 240 Irish women travelling to England each year for abortion was unmistakably clear. In her remarks, she stuck to the issue of abortion in cases involving babies with a life-limiting condition (“fatal foetal abnormality”) and never clarified that the 240 abortions also included abortions on other grounds. This is central to the claims the Pro Life Campaign made about Ms Cairns misleading the Dáil. It's a position we stand over and we have drawn the attention of this to Members of the Oireachtas. Around two-thirds of the 240 abortions Ms Cairns referred to were carried out under Ground C (the so-called abortion-on-demand grounds, which are also legal in Ireland). By contrast, over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023, a much smaller total of eight cases involved babies diagnosed with anencephaly, Edwards syndrome or Patau syndrome. These facts matter, particularly in the context of the ongoing debate over abortion in Ireland, as politicians push for the grounds for late-term abortions to be widened further while ignoring Ireland’s soaring abortion numbers, which reached 10,852 in the latest recorded year. Perhaps we shouldn’t be all that surprised at Journal.ie's conclusions when, in their response, they refer to abortion as “treatment” and allow terms like “abortion care” to go unchallenged, when in reality all that abortion accomplishes is ending the life of an innocent and defenceless unborn child. thejournal.ie/factcheck-pro-…

Idaho’s new law to make the firing squad its primary method of execution takes effect on July 1, 2026, and there are several companies making money by building new facilities to carry out such executions. We're partnering with @WorthRises to urge the companies to withdraw from their contracts. 🖋️ Sign the Worth Rises petition that we’ll deliver in the coming weeks 👉 worthrises.org/firingsquad

Over on Bluesky the Social Democrats posted earlier about International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. As yet they have posted nothing for #WorldDownSyndromeDay Neither have Labour for that matter. I wonder why that is?! 🤔 At least (for now) they appear to actually have some shame.

This quote is particularly telling: ‘we have a great welfare system and a good quality of life. This includes people with disabilities who could work, have a family and in general lead good lives.. Even if our society can offer that, we still choose to avoid the birth of children with disabilities’. ‘Avoid the birth’ is a really sanitised way of saying we kill these children. So in Iceland at least, based on the above, what is being said is, we have everything in place for people with Down Syndrome to take their place in Icelandic society, but people choose to kill them in utero anyway. Why? Because they are the ‘wrong type’ of children. Ableism/eugenics and abortion go hand in hand. #Worlddownsyndromeday #ProLife #ConsistentLifeEthic

“In Iceland, around 80–85% of pregnant women undergo prenatal screening & almost all pregnancies with a confirmed diagnosis of Down syndrome are terminated.” @UN raising key questions about how we value people with Down’s syndrome in our society. unric.org/en/declining-b…

@AmnestyUK Organisation talks about ‘human rights’ while advocating for some humans being able to kill other humans and then warns about ‘nuance’. In the denial of ‘human rights’ to certain humans, there is little nuance to be found. #ProLife #ConsistentLifeEthic

A step forward. A step back. On Wednesday 18 March the UK’s House of Lords passed several changes that partially decriminalise abortion and pardon women who have been convicted under a 1861 law. Those women should have never been criminalised. This is a historic step ahead in the fight to decriminalise abortion and the right to health. However, we also need to consider the wider context. The amendments were passed as part of the Crime & Policing Bill, which has measures to restrict the right to protest even further. A bad bill, with a good win. This contradiction shows us clearly the difficult moment we live in: how hard it is to protect and advance all of our human rights. Historically it’s been through protest we’ve won women’s rights. We need both the right to protest and the right to safe and legal abortion. We can’t have one without the other. Our rights are interconnected.

For #WorldDownSyndromeDay remembering my 4th pregnancy loss which turned out to be a little girl w/ Down Syndrome. Her heart stopped in utero ~12 weeks gestation. About 5yrs later, I had Brendan Bjørn (RIP). 💜 For all those extra-special kiddos today, much love ❤️

@Europarl_EN @dontscreenusout Spare us. You recently supported resolutions affirming abortion as a right. Abortion is the very practice that is eradicating people with Down Syndrome wherever it is readily available. Bit rich then to talk about ‘diversity and inclusion’ for people with Down Syndrome.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day (21/3). The date symbolises the 3 copies of chromosome 21 unique to people with Down Syndrome. The day was created to celebrate people with Down syndrome and to make sure they have the same freedoms and opportunities as everybody else.

For people in Ireland who are expressing shock at the vote last night in the British House of Lords. Below is from the 2018 legislation in Ireland. The same thing already applies here in terms of women who perform an abortion themselves outside of the Act’s provisions at any point after the 12 week limit. It is not an offence for a woman to do this. #sec23" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2018/act/3…

As various Irish political parties post here and elsewhere in the coming days about World Down Syndrome Day, remember that most of them supported legislation meaning that people with Down Syndrome can be killed in utero up to 12 weeks gestation. It isn’t reported on here so other than anecdotal evidence from the Master of the Rotunda several years ago, we don’t know how many lives are ended in the Irish state each year after prenatal testing. Keep it in mind when the likes of Labour and the Soc Dems vacuously talk about the rights of people with Down Syndrome and the contribution they make to society. Those same parties are ok with these people being killed purely because they have Down Syndrome. #ProLife #ConsistentLifeEthic
