Agree, 100% we shouldn’t be tying ourselves in knots. Even bigger issue is the brilliant talent we are scaring away from other countries with our immigration policies for great talent.
David Sacks@DavidSacks

This is concerning. For the first time, a Chinese model Kimi K3 has taken #1 on the Frontend Code Arena and is scoring at or near the frontier on other benchmarks. Meanwhile America is tying itself in knots: politicians and bureaucrats are banning new data centers, piling on state regulations, and pushing for new federal agencies to pre-approve frontier models. This is how you lose the AI race. The rest of the world won’t play by our rules if we bog ourselves down. Permissionless innovation is how America won the internet and became the technological envy of the world. We can do it again with AI -- while addressing risks in a targeted way -- or we’ll watch our lead evaporate.

@WilloughbyMayor @johnonmain Don’t you dare call Italians and Jews 85 IQ or third worlder. They’re Americans now. Italians have New Jersey, and Jews have New York. Is this not obvious??

@boscobian @johnonmain lol imagine thinking that. That’s a bizarre, insane belief that you think an 85 IQ third worlder will ever think they’re American. They’re here to loot our treasury, not contribute.

@BillAckman @NYCMayor To be fair this is not an insane wage at all. My friends at Google make way more and they are far from having the impact of a mayor, like sooooooooooo far from that impact.

.@NYCMayor Mamdani’s appointed advisory commission is recommending an 18.2% raise for himself and other elected officials purportedly because of inflation, yet his self-appointed Rent Guidelines Board — which is supposed to consider inflation in setting rents— froze rents for two years. A question for the mayor: How is this fair or appropriate?

What happened to YC? The brand is just in shambles now IMO. I used to watch all of the lectures and videos on youtube when I was in high school. Honestly it's pretty upsetting to me, I used to love this stuff. Am I just getting old? It just feels so low quality and unserious now

@john_dough @Jack_Raines It’s quite out of touch to think entire neighborhoods are making over a million dollars, except for presidio heights where it is totally plausible.

The real issue is misalignment of expectations. Here’s a quick Zillow search for 1BRs and studios sub-$3500 in SF. Plenty of 1BRs that are easily affordable. “It’s not in the Marina and I also want Equinox and..” Consumer surplus in a Tier-1 city isnt a right!

Karl: Israel is a Jewish state. That’s in the charter. Do you support that? Mamdani: I’ve said time and again that I support the state of Israel as a state with equal rights. Karl: As jewish state? Mamdani: I believe that any state that privileges one religion over another is one that I can’t tell you I support, whether it be Israel or Saudi Arabia or anywhere else. And a lot of that comes back to a fundamental belief that we should all be considered equal, no matter what our faith is.

I don't know a single actual Eileen Gu fan. She has fewer Instagram followers than her looks + media presence + achievements should normally yield. Alysa Liu overtook her follower count within like a week of winning gold. People respect her. Every child in China knows her. But nobody's really going out of their way to keep up with what she's up to. It's because Eileen is just very artificial and unrelatable. >IVF-created without father >raised by elite banker single mom >no loyalty or identification with any particular tribe or culture >Looks like 20 but speaks like a 40yo CEO guy on LinkedIn Idk, I just think people like organic stuff, and Eileen comes off as too ultra-processed

Never mind about the Rolex… had no idea buying one was like buying a Ferrari, where you have to beg, jump though hoops and then buy products you don’t want to get the one you do want! 😂 thought it would be fun to own, but would much prefer to just order something on a website (like a Tesla!) and be done with it. These retail and reseller channels make things far too time consuming Is there a nice watch I can just… order?

Seriously, move to oakland. My neighbors are doctors and nurses, interior designers, wine distributors, salespeople, lawyers, work at non-profits, etc. Yes, some tech sales and devs. They're all young families, and not just SF expats. Vibes are so far from the permanent underclass stress in SF.
Deedy@deedydas

The vibes in SF feel pretty frenetic right now. The divide in outcomes is the worst I've ever seen. Over the last 5yrs, a group of ~10k people - employees at Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Nvidia, Meta TBD, founders - have hit retirement wealth of well above $20M (back of the envelope AI estimation). Everyone outside that group feels like they can work their well-paying (but <$500k) job for their whole life and never get there. Worse yet, layoffs are in full swing. Many software engineers feel like their life's skill is no longer useful. The day to day role of most jobs has changed overnight with AI. As a result, 1. The corporate ladder looks like the wrong building to climb. Everyone's trying to align with a new set of career "paths": should I be a founder? Is it too late to join Anthropic / OpenAI? should I get into AI? what company stock will 10x next? People are demanding higher salaries and switching jobs more and more. 2. There’s a deep malaise about work (and its future). Why even work at all for “peanuts”? Will my job even exist in a few years? Many feel helpless. You hear the “permanent underclass” conversation a lot, esp from young people. It's hard to focus on doing good work when you think "man, if I joined Anthropic 2yrs ago, I could retire" 3. The mid to late middle managers feel paralyzed. Many have families and don't feel like they have the energy or network to just "start a company". They don't particularly have any AI skills. They see the writing on the wall: middle management is being hollowed out in many companies. 4. The rich aren’t particularly happy either. No one is shedding tears for them (and rightfully so). But those who have "made it" experience a profound lack of purpose too. Some have gone from <$150k to >$50M in a few years with no ramp. It flips your life plans upside down. For some, comparison is the thief of joy. For some, they escape to NYC to "live life". For others still, they start companies "just cuz", often to win status points. They never imagined that by age 30, they'd be set. I once asked a post-economic founder friend why they didn't just sell the co and they said "and do what? right now, everyone wants to talk to me. if i sell, I will only have money." I understand that many reading this scoff at the champagne problems of the valley. Society is warped in this tech bubble. What is often well-off anywhere else in the world is bang average here. Unlike many other places, tenure, intelligence and hard work can be loosely correlated with outcomes in the Bay. Living through a societally transformative gold rush in that environment can be paralyzing. "Am I in the right place? Should I move? Is there time still left? Am I gonna make it?" It psychologically torments many who have moved here in search of "success". Ironically, a frequent side effect of this torment is to spin up the very products making everyone rich in hopes that you too can vibecode your path to economic enlightenment.
