In as much as I'm a fan of East Africa's richest man, and his sister.. the average Coke drinker in Kenya isn't going to start drinking Mo Cola to save 20 bob. Kenya is not Tanzania or Uganda.

@Mbwesaa Ghana and Uganda both had well trained civil servants yet still experienced coups post-independence. Civil service quality wasn’t the key variable for post-independence stability, ethnic/sectarian competition was

The British had prepared for an exit and did some reforms post WWII by creating local govts, a civil service etc. with Africans trained into administration before independence. Now compare this to a country like DRC. The Belgians simply said "Good luck" and just walked away
Paul Olind@OlindPaul

In Kenya for example, had we experienced a 60s-style coup like Nigeria’s, with officers mobilising openly along ethnic lines, I genuinely doubt the country would have survived intact as a state. Why didn't that happen here? The answers are probably not the ones pple like hearing

Met His Excellency Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius, at State House Nairobi. We are expanding economic ties with Mauritius by strengthening trade and investment across various sectors. In April 2026, our two countries organised a trade promotion forum especially aimed at enhancing manufacturing and services. Additionally, we also collaborate on regional maritime security in the Indian Ocean, including fighting against piracy and trafficking. Air connectivity is another pillar of our blossoming ties, with direct flights available both from Nairobi and Mauritius, including via Kenya Airways. I also sought the support of the Prime Minister and his country for the candidature of Supreme Court Justice Njoki Ndung'u for the position of judge of the International Criminal Court.

President Nixon and ex-President LBJ at opening of LBJ Library, Austin, fifty-five years ago next week. Did LBJ enjoy this side-by-side demonstration that he was taller than Nixon? Any comments from you about LBJ's tan suit?

If your country managed to avoid coups and civil war during the fragile early years of post-independence Africa, then it was spared immeasurable suffering both then and in the generations that followed. These were among the worst events that could befall a country at that stage

Helicopter charters for visitors to the national parks? 6. Helicopter services to the Ministry of Interior and the Multi-agency team for aerial surveillance and intelligence services during the summit? 7. @OlindPaul @Mukstastic Same can be said for Nigeria in the early 60s so that doesn’t quite explain it. The real issue was intense ethnic competition compounded by ethnic centered federalism . Congo under Lumumba had a similar problem. Kenya’s ethnic competition was pretty “mild” at this point

@aomenya That time is best spent teaching kids useful life skills…coding, AI, or an actually useful global foreign language. We already have Swahili as a Lingua Franca. However if you’re a Giriama raising your Kid in Pokot, then you should absolutely ensure they learn Pokot

My position on vernacular languages in Kenya has always been that "Every Kenyan child should learn two other indigenous languages in addition to their own mother tongue; in primary school". What do you think?

The Anglo-Saxons liked to give their daughters names ending in wynn, which was an archaic word for joy. Here were the most common ones: 1. Elfwyn (“elf joy”) 2. Wulfwyn (“wolf joy”) 3. Léofwyn (“beloved joy”) 4. Æðelwyn (“noble joy”) 5. Beornwyn (“bear joy”) 6. Déorwyn (“dear joy”) 7. Óswyn (“god joy”) 8. Berhtwyn (“bright joy”) 9. Sigewyn (“victory joy”) 10. Merewyn (“sea joy”)
