Always fascinated how people in the middle ages for hundreds of years just lived amongst the ever decrepitating Roman ruins. It was just a part of daily life for them.

This is the best hard science fiction I've read this year. Much better than the last one in the series. Nice to read some hard science fiction where the hard science is animal behavior, psychology and evolutionary paleontology. "Children of Strife" by Tchaikovsky.

Yeah, I feel like it's inevitable but I'm holding off as long as I can. They'll have their whole lives to explore technology. It's not just about homework. It's about being able to come to me (or anyone) and admit they need help and accept that help. Beyond homework though, I also don't want communication lines to be so shut down that they rely on AI for emotional needs. I know I've probably over thought the situation but gut mom reaction.

I caught my kid using AI to get answers for her homework. I asked her what's the point in doing the homework. She said "to practice." I then said "Well, how much practicing are you getting if you just ask for answers?" She then said "I was getting frustrated." And then I responded "Well you didn't ask for help. You didn't talk to anyone. You went straight for the easy answer. If you need help, come ask me. Make the most of it. No shortcuts." I hate AI. I hate that my kid knows there's an easy button that exists.

@ABDanielleSmith Yes, pick any time and stick with it. Changing clocks around is madness. If people want more sun in some direction that's up to them.

I'm self studying 1st year university physics, just finished mechanics + waves. It genuinely helped me see and understand the world differently already. Biggest adjustment was rotational motion and practicing more abstract stuff like sound waves. Starting thermodynamics now!

Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network. In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome. AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement. We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only. We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements. We remain committed to serve all of humanity as best we can. The world is a complicated, messy, and sometimes dangerous place.
