That’s a child neglect problem, not a homeschooling one. I got crappy grades in highschool because I was being abused at home and couldn’t do my schoolwork. The fact I was in a certain building during the day didn’t stop that. Homeschooling is much more mainstream these days. We homeschool now because it’s a better education, our kids are very advanced, and we like to travel as part of their education. I would absolutely be in favor of an exit exam for all students graduating high school. The same test across the board, public and private. I think there’s little question which group would perform the worst, and it wouldn’t be close. Also this would never happen because that same segment of educators would fight it and they have lots of political power.

Look, pro-homeschooling people are piling on this guy but he's not wrong at all.
I know of families who are straight-up failing to teach their children beyond a 2nd-grade education. Like 16-year-old kids who don't know what the Capital of the US is, have never heard of Toronto, and could not perform a basic algebra problem.
While it's true that there are many excellent homeschooling families whose instruction far exceeds that of any public school, the fact is that the American system of "school your kids however you want" does also yield a lot of severely stunted kids who get stuck playing "catch-up" for the rest of their lives.
My wife was homeschooled, we might homeschool, I'm not averse to the practice per se, but it's a fact that there's a whole world of multi-generational homeschoolers who are not and will not rise above a 2nd or 3rd grade education level by their own volition.
Should the state intervene in these cases? I dunno, the answer to the question is not as "easy" as many make it out to be. The idea of barely getting through 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' at the age of 16 should be appalling, and it IS happening in some American homeschooler families.

Do Homeschool kids just like, not have to take tests or exams or get grades? How does the government know if the child is actually getting an education and not just like, being neglected

No, this is not being nice about it. Being nice would have been if the person had a) minded his or her own business, or b) asked if he or she could help because she just moved in and is on crutches. This person didn’t even sign their name, let alone come over and introduce themselves. They definitely knew they were not being nice.
English

@cecsquared Well they are being nice about it.
I'm a stickler myself about yard work. If you can't do it yourself it only costs $40 at most to pay someone for a mow and go.

We sued Cloudera yesterday for discriminating against U.S. workers for high-paying tech jobs.

@googlygump @IRomen77 @missus_wormy And gig work was not yet a thing. McDonalds wasn’t even hiring in 2008. It was really a lost decade for a lot of folks.
English

@IRomen77 @missus_wormy 2008-2014 was shit if you were just coming out of school. No jobs and the affordability crisis was starting to pick up steam. The culture wasn't quite as gay and pozzed, but all the seeds were there.

I have been suffering from an excruciatingly painful medical condition since the beginning of the year and it is very difficult physically to get any clothes onto my body. I choose to wear loungewear because it’s the only thing I can physically do by myself. I do not wear a dress because I cannot wear standard female undergarments without being in excruciating pain. You would not know any of this by looking at me. It’s nice to know that, if I went to mass with this woman she would be silently disapproving of my clothing and gossiping about me on the internet.

I find it so hilarious when people comment "What if they can't afford nice clothes!" And they're talking about somebody wearing a $150 Lululemon loungewear set

Anyone who has suffered alone can feel a punch in the gut when Jesus asks why they couldn’t stay awake with him for just an hour. Truth right here. Pray for those who are suffering.

Go to ER with chest pain/discomfort. Today. It’s insane what these insurance companies are allowed to do. It amounts to practicing medicine without a license. It took me a solid month to get approval for a different brand of inhaler that’s only slightly more money than the “approved” ones. I am literally allergic to an inactive ingredient in every other brand that exists and doctor wrote it into the prescription. I hope you can get your scan shortly.
English

RANT: So I pay $1700 a month for Blue Cross insurance for myself and my daughter. My cardiologist is worried about this massive clot in my heart and scheduled a scan but I have to get another doctor that I have never met to approve it. He can't meet with me for six months. The way we pay for healthcare is broken.

@Tanyaelisabeth My first was born 9 months to the day after our wedding. He was a couple weeks early but I still think that is pretty funny.

This was us, and based on how cycles are measured and pregnancy weeks are calculated we technically got pregnant before our wedding day
Futuristic_Fudge@FudgeFuturistic
When I get married, she's gonna be pregnant so fast the old judgy people in church will think it was a shotgun wedding.

@mattswaim Sunday evening is the best. Or the very earliest one there is on Sunday. It’s usually a simple Mass and that’s my favorite.

@DMAC_19 Odyssey. I had 4 in 5 years and can't imagine how I would have done it without the sliding doors. After my husband's accident, I drove a suburban for a month and I couldn't wait to get a new van. Visibility is scary bad in those things too (but I'm small so maybe it's just me).
