This is a subset of the affordability debate but I think there are a fair number of youngish Americans with $200-250k household incomes who feel like that should afford a nicer lifestyle than it actually can in top 10 metros (in part because retirees still have the good houses).

@cybelethebest No I think the often literally mean one. If you can’t afford for someone to stay home and you don’t have an extra $1000-$3000/m for childcare a month then you literally can not afford one child.

When people say they "can't afford" kids, of course they don't literally mean that they can't afford the bare minimum of sustenance and a roof over their heads. They mean that they can't picture having more than one or maybe 2 without a substantial hit to their standard of living and status. And you know what, that's not so hard to get! Most people want to provide their kids more than the bare minimum to survive (unless you're Hickman I guess). And most people don't want to see their kids being downwardly mobile.

The idea that anyone "can't afford" kids is complete nonsense. The "analysis" claiming it costs $300k to raise a kid is braindead garbage. Anyone who falls for it is probably doing us all a favor by not reproducing.

@DOOMS0NG @BlakeSNeff i worked at a pizza place from ‘19-‘25 and while the company (had like 7 local stores) had a website you could apply on, we found it at our particular store much easier to just pull from papers, sometimes if it was slow we would let them interview on the spot if they wanted

When I applied for my first job at a supermarket the summer after HS, my parents made me fill out the application on a typewriter, insisting that "everyone" did this. But in an awesome feat of Boomer genius this completely worked; this was during peak 2009 crash and hiring was tight, and the manager expressly said they brought me in because I was "the typewriter guy."

Hi, so the woman who carried and gave birth to me was 13 years old, celebrated her 14th birthday only days before I was born. I should’ve been aborted. It’s really terrible that she was made to carry and birth a baby while she was a child herself. Am I happy to be alive? Yes. Absolutely. Very happy to be here. Would I be mad had I been aborted? No, I wouldn’t exist, I wouldn’t feel anything. I shouldn’t exist. She was a child. The lives of girls/women are more valuable than fetuses.

IMHO, it's good that the highest birthrate is age 30-34 and the lowest is now age 15-19. Teens should be in school, sports, going to prom, enjoying the end of their childhood! We do not just want "more births," we want more healthy strong FAMILIES: Married adult parents raising their children in a stable home.

@DoveRespecter @chickenhoez @neerajadeshp Sounds similar to me! I didn't have high AMH, though. Amenorrhea, small cysts, normal androgen levels. Took about six months to get pregnant after stopping BC, no supplements other than prenatals. Also, most of these issues resolved without BC after I gave birth the first time.

The arrogance of doctors is unreal. I’m not categorically against hormonal birth control, especially for women who know they would abort in the event of an unplanned pregnancy (at which point hormonal/IUD is most reliable), but the real reason women are turning against it is in large part because they’ve personally had terrible experiences with it, not because someone said something mean about the Pill on social media.

I've had the coil myself and I thought it was very good, but having it put in was undeniably an unpleasant and painful experience. Women know full well that getting the coil fitted is painful and aren't being fooled by the standard NHS "just take some paracetamol" line.
