Watching C4 on Sunday night I was quite taken by dog breeder Lee Cox winning Crufts Best in Show with his unusual clumber spaniel Bruin. Not sure I feel same way now as The Times has revealed Cox has a conviction for causing unnecessary suffering to a dog. Further, I am astonished that with his conviction, Cox is a judge at Crufts. It was back in 2001 that an RSPCA inspector investigated Cox’s kennels in Mark, Somerset. She discovered putrid smell of dog waste, overflowing drains, dogs left bald and dirtied. She found a spaniel with a chronically infected ear that was bleeding, ulcerated and oozing pus. The ear had to be cut off. Cox admitted he did not take the spaniel to the vet and had mistakenly treated its ear infection meant for another animal. He and his business partner were found guilty and given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £5K in costs. Dog breeders have a poor reputation and Crufts allowing Cox to be a judge will not have helped improve that.
