@Eric_Conn I named my daughter after him. Think about the shame I have to live with. Unbearable. I'm thinking about renaming her to J. Gresham Machen.

When a Don Lemon's anti-ICE mob ransacked a church and disrupted the worship of a congregation tied to his own ecclesial orbit, John Piper said nothing. No rebuke of the mob. No defense of the saints whose worship was violated. No public concern for the desecration of the church. Silence. Total and complete silence. But a monkey video? That gets his blood up, by golly! Suddenly he’s animated, indignant, and firing off condemnations like a cage fighter - like an angry spider-monkey himself - all in a sudden, like Joe Biden with a fresh pre-debate adrenaline shot. This is not moral seriousness. It is selective outrage. It is a man trained to ignore real disorder and real injustice while policing symbolic taboos handed down by the secular priesthood. John Piper, we reject your moral authority. We repudiate your judgment. And we refuse to be lectured by a man who cannot be bothered to defend the church when it is attacked, but leaps into action when progressive sensibilities are butt-hurt. We’ve had enough of that progressive monkey business.

@Eventzon @NateAFischer Sorry, but you are disqualified from opining on matters of morality, but glad you seem to have come to accept the reality of hell as a real place.

@NateAFischer Your pixellate word salad shows that your morality stands for a rapist, a man who pardons a major drug kingpin, a man who sends gov't to kill people. Honey, your vision is morally bankrupt. Selling your soul for the sake of power is a contract made with Hell.

Many are disappointed by comments like this one by Piper. But this is nothing new. Recent years have simply highlighted the true values of many evangelical influencers. And the cost of their influence has been catastrophic. For decades, they were assumed to be generally conservative. While they sent mixed signals, largely steering away from politics, a few conservative-leaning positions and stands on “Biblical orthodoxy” were enough for most to conclude these influencers fell solidly on the right side of the political spectrum. There were also comments like this one, but broader discourse was so saturated with similar comments that it was easy to minimize them. These influencers, as major public leaders, were simply cautious and culturally sensitive. In such a case, we’d expect that as the “permission structure” opened up, these influencers would more openly shift to the right—proclaiming things they truly believed but held back on so as not to distract from their core “Gospel” message. Instead, we’ve seen the opposite. Even as many inside and outside the church throw off leftist taboos and become open to a wider array of ideas, many presumed conservatives have (like Moore) revealed themselves to be thoroughly on the left. Many others like Piper showed natural inclinations that align with the center-left norms of the 1990s and 2000s. The damage is impossible to assess. As the left pushed decades of cultural revolution, the church could have firmly resisted and advanced a substantive alternative. Instead, we had a church shaped by pastor-influencers who embraced many of the left’s premises, departing primarily on the most privatized, individualistic, and pietistic items. Naturally, a church led by such people was neutered. It’s no surprise the church presented no great resistance to rolling sexual revolution and the LGBTQ agenda. It’s no surprise most ostensibly Christian institutions caved to BLM. And it’s no surprise that when an alternative emerged to challenge the left, it was not led by people who came out of those churches. Many of these evangelical influencers lament “unchristian” messaging and policies from Trump and other emerging leaders on the right. But those same influencers never tried to offer a credible alternative. They never tried to lead opposition to the left when they had the chance. These influencers claim their concerns reflect Christian values, but the simpler and more consistent explanation seems to be that they’ve always held leftist values. Now, more than ever, Americans are actively looking for positive alternatives to the “progressive” vision. The American church needs leaders who can help shape and offer such an alternative.
John Piper@JohnPiper

One not to be so afraid of sounding “quasi-woke” that one cannot agree with Russell Moore on this.

@TomBuck @MusingsOnChrist John seems to wade into politics only about once every five years. The topics he chooses to weigh in on speak volumes. Where was this voice of moral authority three weeks ago when leftists were attacking the church in his city that he helped plant?

@MusingsOnChrist A conscience would convict you to tell the whole story and not merely post a screenshot that isn't a full representation of the story and advances a false narrative... Particularly after the whole story is available. x.com/RapidResponse4…

.@POTUS: "I just looked at the first part. It was about voter fraud...2020 voter fraud...and I didn't see the whole thing...then I gave it to [my] people. Generally, they'd look at the whole thing, but I guess somebody didn't...We took it down as soon as we found out about it."

Once again, this is a category error. Phil is assuming that for the sake of evangelism Christians should not wield power in their country. But that doesn’t work for a representative republic. In our system, we as citizens are given the responsibility to set laws and select leaders. That’s wielding political power. There’s nothing sinful about that. Especially when you’re wielding power for the good. In fact, I would say it is a sin to NOT uphold your civic responsibilities in the way that the constitution grants – – free association, free speech, and selecting leaders who best represent our interests. I mean, Esther sought and gained a position of political power, And she used it for the good of her people. Should we condemn that use of power?
Phil Vischer@philvischer

The fatal error of most strains of Christian Nationalism occurs when we look at the way the world wields power (through domination & coercion), and instead of rejecting it, we envy it. We believe we can accomplish God's ends through the world's means. We want the ring.

There are 10,000 ways that Christian leaders should better engage with politics, but yet the best we can get is a guy willing to gush with pride about the long lines of Somali voters in Minneapolis, to implore people not to vote in 2020 because of the apparent moral equivalence of Trump's "meanness" and Biden's abortion fetish, and apparently, err...to shake his angry fists at a monkey video hoax.

It’s not that I don’t think you can criticize Trump as a Christian leader. It’s just that I find your criticism suspect if the only time you pipe up about politics is when Trump or Republicans have done something you don’t like. Abortion and the genital mutilation of kids aren’t enough to generate your public outrage, but Trump’s tweets are. The only time we can count on your voice is when liberals are angry, but never to call out the injustice of vaccine mandates, pregnancy centers being firebombed, or the Biden admin taking school lunches away from schools who wouldn’t go along with the trans madness. That’s just gonna make it tough for me to take your outcry seriously

I don’t think that those slogans sum up “true conservatism,” but even if they did, you seem to forget that Bill Kristol voted for Kamala Harris.
Mostly Moderate@MostlyMod

@All_Right_Now2 @michaeljknowles What does true conservatism mean to you? To actual conservatives it means limited government, free markets, individual liberty, American exceptionalism, anti-totalitarianism, and respect for institutions. Kristoll still believes and advocates for ALL of that. The GOP doesn't.

Join the pro-trans side in 2026 is like boarding the Titanic an hour after it hit the iceberg. Even most Democrats are trying desperately to flee this sinking ship. Jumping on board, especially at THIS stage of the game, is baffling.

@WallsOther Other things remaining equal, the self deportations will slow down because those most inclined to leave will have already left. At 600,000 deportations a year it will take 20+ years just to undo Biden's damage. We MUST go faster.
