Scientists have mapped Earth’s vast underground fungal networks for the first time, revealing a staggering 68 quadrillion miles of fungal threads that help regulate the climate. A groundbreaking new study estimates that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi form an underground network stretching roughly 110 quadrillion kilometers (68 quadrillion miles), equivalent to nearly a billion times the distance from Earth to the Sun. These microscopic fungal threads create symbiotic relationships with over 70% of land plants, exchanging nutrients and water for carbon while locking away massive amounts of CO₂ in the soil. The research, led by the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN), used machine learning models trained on data from more than 16,000 global soil cores, combined with high-resolution robotic imaging of fungal hyphae. However, these critical networks face a serious threat from modern industrial agriculture. Fungal density in croplands is nearly 50% lower than in undisturbed ecosystems, largely due to tilling, chemical fertilizers, and fungicides. This loss reduces the soil’s ability to store carbon, weakens nutrient cycling, and increases chemical runoff. The findings underscore the urgent need to protect these hidden ecosystems. Researchers plan to present the data at the upcoming UN desertification summit to push for global conservation benchmarks. [Stewart, J. D., et al. (2026). Global density and biomass of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal networks. Science. DOI: 10.1126/science.adu4373]

@rileybrown No need. Just get a Verizon jet pack with 150GB/m for like $99/m Or AT&T has a 200GB hotspot plan. I use this 95% of the time and it’s not regular mobile hotspot - it’s actual WiFi 🛜

Subagentmaxxing or /goal + subagents (^2 depth). You should naturally evolve towards this when you try to max your agents run for longer or solve more complex task. You replace your oversight with another agent, and then their oversight with another agent around.
Peter Steinberger 🦞@steipete

Here’s your monthly reminder that you shouldn’t be prompting coding agents anymore. You should be designing loops that prompt your agents.

Today we’re introducing Gemma 4 12B — our latest open model that brings advanced agentic reasoning, vision and audio directly to your laptop. It delivers performance nearing our larger Gemma models with a much smaller total memory footprint, while being small enough to run locally with just 16GB of VRAM. It’s open and accessible for everyone to use under a permissive Apache 2.0 license. This is all made possible by our new, unified architecture that removes separate multimodal encoders. Here’s how we did it 🧵

We just launched Sites into Codex! Software creation was always about more than writing code. Sites in Codex fundamentally gives the power of end-to-end software creation to every user, no matter their technical fluency. These Sites are fully deployed to a URL, private to workspaces, come with authentication, can have static files, and can store dynamic data in databases. It is in preview for business and enterprise teams and will be rolling out to all workspaces over the next day. Give it a try by typing @ Sites into Codex and ask it to build anything! This project took a massive amount of effort across hundreds of people at OpenAI - proud that we were able to get this out and excited to see what you all build with it!

@joshwoodward This is true for the API key as well. I was charged $2 for one failed video generation via AI studio. I stopped using Google altogether. Please fix this, there is hope.

Over the past year, we've been building our own internal agent infrastructure at YC: over 350 tools, self-improving skill loops, and a shared organizational brain that gets smarter overnight. In this episode of the @LightconePod, we sat down with YC General Partner Pete @koomen to talk about how he led the effort from the ground up. We cover how giving agents unrestricted access to one database was the key unlock, the self-improving skill loops that get smarter overnight, and why he thinks we've arrived at the personal computer moment for AI. 00:39 — YC's AI Stack 02:15 — The Finance Team Problem That Started It All 05:07 — SQL Access Changes Everything 07:20 — One Database to Rule Them All 09:14 — Jevons Paradox 10:07 — Denormalizing for Agents 12:15 — The Single-Player Era of Agents 14:16 — 350 Tools and a Shared Registry 16:24 — Skillify, DRY, and MECE Resolvers 18:23 — The Self-Improving Dream Cycle 20:26 — The Two-Sentence Pitch Skill 23:06 — How Super Intelligence Compounds 25:10 — Recording Everything as a Building Layer 27:10 — The Shared Organizational Brain 29:18 — Trust-Default Culture as a Requirement 30:44 — Raising the Floor for New Employees 32:35 — Horseless Carriages 34:24 — Why Chat Is the Best Interface for Agents 38:50 — Just-in-Time Software 40:49 — Centralizing vs. Decentralizing AI 43:32 — The Personal AI Revolution
