📍Ulsoor Lake, Bengaluru
If you’ve walked around Ulsoor Lake recently, you’ve probably noticed something shocking the lake is almost completely drained.
But this isn’t a crisis. It’s actually part of a major restoration effort.
After nearly 20 years, authorities have drained the lake to carry out desilting and deep cleaning of the lake bed. Over time, layers of silt, waste and pollutants settle at the bottom of lakes, reducing their depth and water-holding capacity. The current work is being carried out with government funding under a lake rejuvenation project, where engineers first divert the water through the outlet and then remove the accumulated silt.
Why this matters:
• Desilting helps increase the lake’s storage capacity
• It improves water quality and ecosystem health
• It prepares the lake to refill with fresh rainwater after summer
Ulsoor Lake is one of Bengaluru’s oldest and largest lakes, originally built during the time of the Kempe Gowda rulers and spread over about 50 hectares with multiple islands.
So what you’re seeing right now is the lake being reset cleaned, restored, and hopefully prepared for a healthier future.
Sometimes a lake has to be emptied…
so it can come back alive again.
