@BBCWomansHour @Charlie_Craggs @naomishimada @BBCSounds If we (men) identify as women, what do we build that identity on? Its not the lived experience of women, female bodied people, it can only be built on the image and ideal of femininity, that our, male dominated culture creates. It can only be an expression of the male gaze.

a good example of this is John Lydon -- uberpunk Johnny Rotten of Sex Pistols fame -- who met his wife when he was 19 or so, married her at 23 and stayed married for 44 years until her death after a long battle with alzheimers during which he was her full-time caregiver.

Coming back from a series of focus groups in West Yorkshire. Notable how often the Golders Green attack and worries about the safety of Britain’s Jewish community were raised across most of the groups in a way I haven’t really had (outside of London) after previous incidents.

My main problem with this is how utterly inoffensive it is. Whoever looks upon it believes that it's saying something about their opposition, and not themselves. It flatters people into believing *they* are the free thinkers in a world blinded by ideology, and nobody is ever forced to grapple with any complex issues or do any sort of soul searching. This is why Banksy isn't truly counter culture and is not dangerous or transgressive in any way. The art just reinforces whatever you already believe about yourself.

Today I met five Holocaust survivors in Frankfurt. They shared their families’ stories of the Nazi genocide: the deliberate, industrial slaughter of six million Jews, murdered simply for existing. While they spoke, I couldn’t help but think of my friends and family members who call the war in Gaza a “Holocaust.” It is far beyond ignorance. It is a disgusting distortion that erases the Holocaust’s uniqueness, only to further continue the demonization of Jews. If Israel truly intended to commit genocide against Palestinians, it would be systematically killing millions of Palestinians worldwide, starting with the 2 million Palestinians and Arabs who live inside Israel today. Instead, Palestinians and Arabs make up about one in four doctors in Israel. The vast majority of Gazans survived the intense bombardment that flattened 75% of Gaza; because Israel repeatedly warned civilians through phone calls, text messages, and leaflets dropped from the air, forcing them to evacuate targeted areas. Still they call what happened in Gaza a "Holocaust." The Nazis rounded up Jews across Europe, bused and transported them to death camps, and systematically murdered them with the explicit goal of total extermination, of every Jew, in every European city. The contrast between Hitler’s ideology and Israel’s actions is clear as day to anyone who does not intrinsically view Jews as evil. I feel unwell today.

Speaking an Iranian still inside Iran, writing this through Starlink while my hands are literally shaking with rage and grief. Sometimes, I can’t hold back the tears anymore. Look at this poster they’ve plastered on every street corner [first image]. The Islamic Republic’s latest public death threat: Starlink, satellite dishes, VPNs — all illegal. Use them and you will be punished to the maximum. Phones crossed out. Dishes crossed out. Even the word “Starlink” in blood-red letters. They are openly hunting us for daring to seek truth. And they just proved they mean it. This innocent Iranian father [second image] was using Starlink — just like me — to get real news for his family in the middle of the blackout and get the censored information out to the world. They arrested him. They tortured him. They beat him to death. A father. A husband. A man who only wanted to protect his children from the regime’s lies. I am using Starlink right now to write these words to you. Every single day the regime’s agents threaten me. Every single day I know I could be next. My heart is shattered. My soul is on fire. The fear is real and it never leaves. But I will not stop. My country is on the line. My people are on the line. 90 million Iranians are suffocating in this 47-year nightmare. We are living in hell — neither war nor peace, economic pressure crushing every family, their new Chinese-style tiered internet and “White Simcard” loyalty system deciding who is even allowed to see the outside world. And now they are literally killing people for trying to connect. We have endured massacres, rapes, executions, and grief for 47 years. We have buried our sons and daughters in the streets. We danced and cried with pure joy when you removed Khamenei because we finally saw hope. This father’s blood will not be in vain. We are willing to endure everything — the blackouts, the arrests, the torture, the economic pressure— if it means the Islamic Republic finally falls. Anything to be free. Anything to end this evil. President Trump, the free world — see what they are doing to us? Keep the pressure. Do not look away. The Iranian people are watching, bleeding, and still standing. The Lion and Sun will rise again. For this father. For every father. For every son and daughter who still dreams of freedom. We will never forget. And we will never forgive those who helped the butchers. #IranMassacre#IranWar #KingRezaPahlavi‌ForIran

SHE NAMED THE ABUSERS. THEY SENT HER ON A DIVERSITY COURSE. In 2001, solicitor Adele Weir was hired by Rotherham Council on a Home Office programme to research child sexual exploitation in the area. What she found was horrifying. Her ten-page mapping exercise named suspects, listed car registrations, and linked 54 abused children to one family. She estimated 270 victims at that point alone. She took her findings to senior South Yorkshire Police (@syptweet) officers. They told her the report was unhelpful. A police commander accused her of making up stories and deliberately lying. She was told to anonymise individuals and institutions. She was told she and her colleagues were exceeding their roles. Then files were stolen from the Risky Business office where she worked. No broken locks. No broken windows. A computer had been accessed. A police officer stopped her in her car and told her, in no uncertain terms, that people knew where she lived. Her work was sidelined. By 2007 the operation around her had effectively collapsed. Her reports were finally released by South Yorkshire Police (@syptweet) in 2015, only after a Freedom of Information request. The Jay Report, published in 2014, found that approximately 1,400 children had been abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. It concluded that by 2005 it was hard to believe senior officers and elected members were not aware of the problem. Zero senior officials were prosecuted. Zero. A researcher identified the abuse network in 2001 with names, car plates, and victim counts. The institution's response was to bury the paperwork and threaten the person who wrote it. I'm fairly confident that this is how every Local Authority / Police operate They don't want to acknowledge or address Child Sexual Abuse especially when it involves their own Safeguarding failures This is exactly what I experienced when I whistleblew about poor Safeguarding in an Oxfordshire Children's home I evidenced vulnerable children who were involved with County Lines drug trafficking I evidenced vulnerable children who were being trafficked for sex I evidenced serious failures to carry out thorough assessments of Children's needs I evidenced failures to collaborate with other agencies and professionals Both of which are a statutory legal responsibility under s10 and s11 of the Children's Act I experienced senior officers, including managers, Independent Reviewing Officer, Directors of Children's Services, Safeguarding lead, LADO, Director of Law and Governance, Chief executive Officers, elected cllrs, including the Leader of the Council. I saw coercion used and Head Teachers and other school staff submitting fraudulent Safeguarding reports to project blame elsewhere to deflect away from their failures I experienced numerous Judges in the Family Courts willing to ignore serious crimes including Child Sexual Abuse, rape, attempted murder I experienced Judges who issued Court Orders to Oxfordshire County Council and Thames Valley Police to disclose records of Safeguarding reports made, crimes reported, investigations carried out and witness statements recorded and signed. Both Oxfordshire County Council and Thames Valley Police FAILED to comply with these Court Orders, Contempt of Court, yet Judges FAILED to address this and projected blame onto me I experienced the weaponisation of Psychiatry and Lawfare. This was clearly a very well known route with Police and Children's Services confident in finding a Judge willing to cover up their failures I didn't have copies of bundles, every application I submitted was ignored and the Court FAILED to acknowledge or address it. I was denied any opportunity to challenge the application There is a reason why Oxfordshire has such a serious problem with Child Sexual Exploitation and County lines drug trafficking. It's because the agencies that have a statutory legal duty for Safeguarding - Courts, Cafcass, Local Authorities, Children's Services, Schools, collude and protect perpetrators In the same way that they have in Southport, Sara Sharif, Harvey Willgoose, Nottingham Systemic multi agency Safeguarding failures are rife across the UK This is not an accident It's deliberate It's criminal - fraud, attempts to pervert the course of justice, gross misconduct in public office, breaches of GDPR, Nolan Standards, SWE Code of Practice, Human Rights Act, UN Rights of the Child I witnessed a number of children who DIED and they LIED to cover up their failures I saw many children who suffered extreme suffering as a result of these failures I didn't see one Child who received the psychological support necessary for the trauma they experienced Local Authorities and Police don't acknowledge trauma they only record 'mentally ill' I witnessed vulnerable children who were harvested from the Family Courts on fraudulent data and placed into Children's Homes where they were trafficked and abused for power, control, status, money, sex or drugs. Never for care, they weren't care homes, the absence of care was very evident

When I was dragged through an 18-month disciplinary case by University of Huddersfield as a PhD student, following anonymous 'transphobia' complaints about my writing, the uni policies used to attack me were EDI/harrassment docs and the student handbook. As @ComAcFreedom points out below, it is this level of policy universities commonly use to inhibit lawful speech - and the High Court has just placed this level of policy out of reach of @officestudents in its free speech cases. Furthermore, I was repeatedly told by the registry that the university had no duty to uphold my freedom of speech because this disciplinary was 'not a legal process'. It was 'not about the law'. This is now the inhibition of lawful speech works in practice - for academics and their students. This is how universities dodge their responsibility to uphold free speech. The OFS must appeal - or accept that it has been rendered essentially toothless.
Committee for Academic Freedom@ComAcFreedom

STATEMENT: The High Court’s judgment in R (University of Sussex) v Office for Students has just been handed down, and it represents a serious setback for those concerned with freedom of speech and academic freedom on campus. We’re still working through the detail, but the key points are already clear. At the heart of the ruling are three findings that materially narrow the routes by which the regulator can enforce free-speech protections. First, the court adopts a restrictive interpretation of what counts as a “governing document”. In practice, that means the OfS cannot use its core regulatory condition — Condition E1, which requires universities’ governing documents to uphold free speech and academic freedom — to reach ordinary internal policy frameworks via the “governing documents” route. That matters because EDI policies, harassment codes and reporting systems are often the mechanisms through which lawful but, to some, upsetting speech is regulated on campus. The risk is that a whole layer of policies which, in practice, govern campus culture will now sit beyond the same level of regulatory scrutiny. Second, it resets the meaning of “freedom of speech within the law”. The OfS had treated one of Sussex’s contested policies as problematic because it was capable of capturing lawful speech. The court rejects that approach, holding that the OfS had not properly applied the structured analysis its own guidance requires. Although the regulator accepts that lawful speech may, in some circumstances, be restricted where there are no reasonably practicable steps to secure it and the restriction is justified and proportionate, the court found that it had effectively treated the capture of lawful speech as sufficient to establish a breach. The danger is obvious: the fight over lawful speech will now be pushed into case-by-case balancing exercises, precisely the terrain on which universities have long sought to defend restrictive internal policies. Third, the court gives “academic freedom” a hard-edged but narrow statutory meaning. The relevant legal threshold is whether an academic is placed in jeopardy of losing their job or privileges — not whether they are subjected to investigation, pressure, reputational damage, or a broader chilling effect. On this point too, the OfS’s approach was found to be legally flawed. Yet for academics, the reality is that pressure rarely operates at that level. Instead, it takes softer forms — cancellation, ostracism, exclusion from networks and opportunities, reputational damage — all of which can chill speech long before anyone is formally “in jeopardy” of losing their job. The result is that while the statutory duties to protect academic freedom and freedom of speech remain in place, a gap has opened up between the high-level documents the regulator can scrutinise and the ways speech is managed on campus in practice. We hope the OfS appeals this ruling. Having already stripped students out of the new free-speech complaints scheme, the government has turned the Office for Students into the Office for everyone but students. Now, if this ruling stands and confines the regulator to universities’ formal “governing documents”, while pushing disputes over lawful speech back into case-by-case proportionality tests, the OfS may find its most direct route to the EDI policies and reporting systems through which speech is actually policed cut off — creating the Office for no one at all.

Have you heard the story of Israel offering Palestinian Arab refugees who fled the 1948 war the chance to return — with compensation — just weeks after the fighting ended? That’s exactly what happened at the 1949 Lausanne Conference, the UN-backed attempt to broker peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Here’s the pattern that has defined the conflict for 76 years. The Arab delegations (Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan) refused to even sit in the same room as Israeli representatives. For five months there were no direct talks. They would not recognize Israel as a legitimate negotiating partner. Israel offered to repatriate 100,000 Arab refugees, pay compensation for abandoned lands, release frozen Arab bank accounts, and discuss family reunifications. Israeli delegates also signed the May 12 Protocol accepting the principle of partition. The Arabs rejected everything. They insisted the refugees must return not as citizens seeking peace, but “as masters of the homeland” — explicitly to annihilate the Jewish state. Egypt’s Foreign Minister declared in 1949: “The Arabs intend… to annihilate the State of Israel.” Baghdad Radio broadcast the same message: the Jews were enemies “irrespective of how peace-seeking their intentions may be,” and the Arabs were preparing “the day of vengeance.” The refugees became permanent pawns. Arab states (except Jordan) refused them citizenship, kept them in camps, and weaponized their suffering. The “right of return” was never humanitarian — it was demographic warfare to destroy the Jewish state from within. This was not a one-off. It was the blueprint. 18 years later the Arab League made it explicit at Khartoum: no recognition with Israel, no negotiation of Israel, no peace with Israel. Meanwhile, Israel absorbed around 600,000 Jewish refugees ethnically cleansed from Arab lands — with no UN agency, no generational camps, and no international sympathy. 76 years later the same rejectionist strategy continues, just in new language. The goal has never changed: they will accept no Jewish state in the Middle East, ever.
